A skeleton boy goes fishing

Since I came to the USA I found many people that liked skeletons and Day of the Dead themes, among them are my friends Howard Park and Sarah Seip, owners of 4 Starr Frame Shoppe & Gallery, located in the charming town of Stonington Connecticut.

Desde mi llegada a los Estados Unidos he encontrado mucha gente a la que le gustan los esqueletos y los temas relacionados con el Día de Fieles Difuntos, entre ellos estan mis amigos Howard Park y Sarah Seip, propietarios de la Galería y Taller de marcos 4 Starr, localizada en el pueblo de Stonington Connecticut.

Last year Howard attended my show at Expressiones Gallery in New London, and took home a little skeleton fisher-boy whom was part of a set of three siblings. Later on he requested a "brother" for this little one, and drew a sketch of how he wanted him to be.

El año pasado Howard atendió mi exhibición en la Galería Expressiones, localizada en New London y se llevó a casa un esqueleto pescador, el cual era parte de una serie de tres hermanos esqueletos. Poco después me encargó que le hiciera otro y me hizo un boceto de como quería que se viera.

Howard is an accomplished artist and devoted to fly-fishing, he showed me minuscules hooks and baits used to catch fresh water fish in streams and cold water rivers. I made up my mind to reproduce those tiny details and reach the high quality standards of my arts patron.

Howard es un artista profesional y devoto de la pesca de agua dulce, mientras discutiamos sobre la hechura de su pieza me mostro anzuelos minúsculos que son utilizados para atrapar peces propios de arroyos. Me hice a la idea de reproducir esos pequeños detalles con fidelidad y alcanzar los altos estándares de calidad propios de mi cliente.

First thing was to develop the skeleton of a child, and I made it with wire, getting every bone in place, bending here and there.

Lo primero fue desarrollar el esqueleto de un niño, lo hice con alambre, formando todos los huesos y doblandolos poco a poco.

Later I added arms, which are movable, and his head, which is made of La Doll air dry clay, my favorite brand, very pliable, very strong, and smooth to the touch.

Después le hice brazos, los cuales se pueden mover, su cabeza, que esta hecha de arcilla de roca La Doll, esta es mi favorita, muy ductil, muy resistente y suave al tacto.

The next challenge was to make the fishing pole, not just as an accessory, but as a working device! I wanted it to perform as a real one does.

El siguiente desafio fue hacer la caña de pescar, no solo como un accesorio, sino como un artefacto funcional! Quería que su mecanismo se comportara como uno de verdad.

The fishing pole and the skeleton fish are independent pieces from each other, the fish can be hooked and carried with the fishing pole, due to a minuscule hole that pierces its upper jaw. The fishing pole works, bringing the hook up and down as I wanted it to be! I got success during the making of my second prototype, and found it very rewarding. 

La caña de pescar y el pez esqueleto son piezas independientes, este último se puede enganchar al anzuelo por medio de un minúsculo agujero localizado en su mandíbula superior. La caña de pescar funciona como una de verdad, sube y baja el anzuelo, tal y como lo quería! Tuve éxito durante la hechura de mi segundo prototipo, lo cual resultó muy satisfactorio.

The hook fits in the nail of my little finger, I used very fine feathers, and red thread to make the bait.

El anzuelo cabe en la uña de mi dedo menique, usé plumas muy finas e hilo rojo para hacer la carnada.

Once I had the fishing pole and skeleton fish ready I proceeded in the making of the skeleton's clothes. His outfit was as described by Howard "very much like Tom Sawyer", shorts with only one suspender, barefoot, and wearing a hat, because he fishes in cold waters.

Una vez que la caña y el pez estuvieron terminados estuve lista para seguir con la hechura de la ropa del niño esqueleto. Su ropa fue descrita por Howard como "al estilo de Tom Sawyer", pantalones cortos sujetos por un tirante, descalzo y con un gorro, porque va a pescar en agua muy fría. 

I have among my fabric collection a series of animal prints, which I deeply treasure, these one is a valuable one, with fishing motives. The hat was made using heavy woven fabric.

Poseo una colección de telas con diseños de animales, la cual atesoro enormemente, esta es una de las mas valiosas, con motivos relativos a la pesca. El sombrero esta hecho de tela gruesa.

Due to the design of his arms and hands, skeleton boy is able to hold his fishing pole in diverse positions, and grasp it very firmly because all of his fingers have movement. Finally the piece was completed with the addition of a stand, skeleton boy does not need it because he can stand by himself, but just in case... these pieces are like children... you leave them alone and you never know!!...

Both seemed to be very pleased with the piece, and Sarah named him "Pepito", -Pepito el pescador- added Howard in perfect Spanish.

Debido al diseño de sus brazos y manos este niño puede sostener su caña de pescar en diversas posiciones y sujetarla firmemente porque todos sus dedos se doblan. Finalmente la pieza fue completada con una base, la cual no es relamente necesaria porque se puede parar solo, sin embargo es por si acaso... estas piezas son como niños... uno los deja solos y nunca se sabe!!...

Muchas gracias a Howard y Sarah por compartir su tiempo e historias de pesca conmigo!
Ambos se veian muy contentos con la pieza y Sarah lo bautizo como "Pepito", -Pepito el pescador- agrego Howard en perfecto espanol.

CUTE + CREEPY + COOL

As I mentioned on an earlier post, skeletons are very common things in Mexican life, not only for Day of the Dead, but as an everyday presence. One day I was talking to a very good friend, a New Bedford Massachusetts native, connoisseur of antiques, New England traditions, and great couturier. We were examining clay skulls I recently made for her boutique. As we picked them up and talked about Mexican interpretations, History and folklore, she mentioned that skeletons are present in New England imagery, that I could find them at cemeteries, engraved on tombstones. I diligently went online and searched for them. Soon I found a bunch of pictures depicting winged skulls, and right away my mind started to think of a mix of Mexican-New England skeleton doll.

Anteriormente he mencionado que los esqueletos son muy comunes en México, no sólo durante el Día de Muertos, sino todo el tiempo, se asoman a nuestra realidad de diversas maneras. Una vez estaba platicando con una muy buena amiga, originaria de New Bedford Massachusetts, conocedora de antigüedades, tradiciones de Nueva Inglaterra y gran costurera. Estabamos examinando unos craneos de arcilla que habia hecho recientemente para su boutique y platicabamos de la interpretacion mexicana de estos, cuando me mencionó que tambien hay esqueletos presentes en esta region de Estados Unidos, los cuales podia encontrar en cementerios, grabados en las lapidas. Asi que me fui directo al internet a buscar las imagenes. Muy pronto encontré un monton de fotos mostrandome lápidas con cráneos alados y rápidamente empece a crear una mezcla de esqueleto México-Nueva Inglaterra.

My main objective was to make a skeleton-looking doll, not just something that looked as a skull mounted on a regular doll body. Besides, I wanted the doll to be movable and have bony limbs! Not just an interpretation of bones, but something that looked like the real thing. As I do often, I made a series of three dolls.

Mi objetivo principal era hacer una muñeca que pareciera un esqueleto, no algo que fuera un cráneo montado en el cuerpo de una muñeca común. También quería que tuviera miembros articulados y que estos parecieran de hueso! No sólo una interpretación de huesos, sino algo que se viera como huesos reales. Comencé mi tarea e inicié una serie de tres muñecas.

I made the bodies thin enough to look as a skeleton, the heads were made from a four piece pattern and handsewn, then needle sculpted to make more visible cheekbones, once they were attached I painted them with acrylics, and started making their dresses, the upper part is from my favorite vintage fabric, and the bottom part from printed cotton fabric.

Hice los cuerpos lo sufucientemente delgados como para que parecieran esqueletos, las cabezas se cosieron a mano, estan formadas de cuatro partes independientes, al final realce los pómulos y finalmente pinte los cuerpos con acrílicos. Hice los vestidos con trozos de mi tela antigua favorita y las faldas con tela de algodón.

Once they were ready I felt I wanted to add another skirt. I chose the same vintage fabric that is kind of translucent, I liked very much the fact that the ribs, and printed cotton were visible through it.

Una vez que estuvieron listas sentí que quería agregar otra falda. Escogí la tela antigua que es transparente, me gustó que dejara ver las costillas y el color de las telas.

For the limbs I had the greatest adventure, I started with the idea of using polymerclay, but it turned out to be very brittle and broke at the first trial. I tried two brands, Super Sculpey and Fimo. Then I tried epoxy clay. It was a big adventure modeling this kind of clay, it feels like one is working against the clay's curing time, detailing bones and getting ready holes, wet sanding, and not needing final coat of paint! The epoxy clay proved to be strong enough to enter my favorite art supply cabinet. Finally I tied the bones with silk thread.

La realización de los miembros fue toda una aventura, comencé con la idea de usar polymerclay, pero esta resulto ser muy frágil y se rompió en la primera prueba. Utilicé dos marcas, Super Sculpey y Fimo. Después utilicé plastilina epoxica, esta última resulto ser una gran aventura, uno siente que se lucha contra el tiempo de secado de la plastilina, detallando huesos y haciendo perforaciones, lijando en seco y cuando uno termina no hay necesidad de pintar! La plastilina epoxica probó ser lo suficientemente fuerte como para entrar en el gabinete de mis materiales de arte favoritos. Finalmente amarre los huesos con hilo de seda.

For the making of the wings  I used the quilting technique, and coffee staining, then hand stitched them to the back. Each doll got their ribbons, which matched their dresses.

Para hacer las alas use la tecnica del acolchado, las teni con café y finalmente las cosi en la espalda. Cada muñeca tiene moños en estilos diferentes que combinan con sus vestidos.

THE MOTHER

I thought of posting this story for Mother's day, but it sounded so repetitive that I let all summer pass before I came back to writing. This piece is called "The Mother", and it was inspired from my son's early drawings.

Pense en escribir este articulo para el dia de las Madres, pero sonaba tan repetitivo que deje que el verano completo se pasara antes de regresar a escribir. Esta pieza se llama "La Madre" y esta inspirada en los primeros dibujos de mi hijo.

     This is a mixed media piece, I used paper-mache, paper-clay, fabric, fiberfill, acrylics, different threads and papers, and a big deal of time. The meaning is that of a mother watching her children, they are sleeping in the lower box, a boy and a girl in bunny pajamas. The lower box is a representation of the Mother's womb.

     Esta es una pieza realizada en tecnica mixta, use papel mache, paper-clay, tela, borra sintetica, acrilicos, diferentes hilos y papeles y un buen de tiempo. El significado es el de una madre ciudando a sus hijos, quienes duermen en la caja de abajo, un nino y una nina en piyamas de conejo. La caja de abajo es una representacion del vientre de la Madre.

    
    The children are only 1 1/2" tall, their miniature faces made of paper-clay, by far two of the more interesting, wonderful faces I have ever attempted. Their beds are made of paper-mache, and each one has a mattress, a pillow and a double blanket,

     Los ninos miden solo 3 cm. sus caras estan hechas de paper-clay, estan han sido de las mas interesantes que haya hecho. Las camitas son de papel mache y cada una tiene su propio colchon, almohada y cobija de vista doble.

     The Mother is represented as a head, she might be a woman's head or a stylized representation of the full moon, her expression is both calm and aware, it feels like she is resting after watching her children all day, but ready to intervene if her presence is need at any time. The rope ladder is a representation of her vertebrae, and the means by which her children can climb up to her, from their bedroom (or Mother's womb), thought the "cats' place" right to her head, using the holes that are in the boxes.

     La Madre esta representada como una cabeza de mujer y tambien puede ser la representacion estilizada de la luna llena, su expresion es de calma y al mismo tiempo de alerta, pareciera como si descansara despues de cuidar a sus hijos todo el dia, pero esta lista para intervenir en cualquier momento si su presencia es requerida. La escalera de lazo representa su columna vertebral y es utilizada para que los ninos suban desde su recamara (o el vientre materno), a traves del cuarto de los gatos, hasta donde esta su madre. Se puede pasar de cuarto a cuarto a traves de los hoyos.

     This is the main element taken from my son's drawings, when he started drawing he used to represent people as a head with a ladder like body.

     Este es el elemento principal que tome de los dibujos de mi hijo. Cuando empezo a dibujar solia representar a la gente como una cabeza con cuerpo de escalera.

     Right under the Mother's head there is the cat's place, this box represents the Mother's thorax, where her heart is, this takes the form of five cats who roam all around, and watch endlessly over the children. They represent the protective instincts and intuition of the Mother, which are at work forever, even when the children have grown up and live independent lives.
 
     Abajo de la cabeza esta el cuarto de los gatos, esta caja representa el torax de la Madre, donde se encuentra su corazon y el cual toma la forma de cinco gatos que deambulan cuidando a los ninos para siempre. Representan el instinto protector y la intuicion de la Madre, los cuales trabajan para siempre, aun cuando los hijos han crecido y viven de manera independiente.

BREAKTIME

I got ready last September 2012 for my first solo exhibit after 4 years of retirement due to the birth of my son. I had very few time for finishing my work, only 3 months for filling a whole gallery. I took the challenge and the new pieces started revealing themselves, one of them was called "Breaktime".

El pasado septiembre del 2012 me encontro alistandome para lo que seria mi primera exhibicion individual despues de 4 anios de retiro, el cual me tome despues del nacimiento de mi hijo. Tenia muy poco tiempo para terminar mi trabajo, solo 3 meses para llenar una galeria. Tome el desafio y las piezas nuevas comenzaron a develarse poco a poco, una de ellas se llamo "Breaktime" (descanso).

I did a written description of the piece in my notebook, it was very unusual because what I do is to sketch the idea, still, I went with the flow, and started wondering how I was going to bring to life the description (Translated from original Spanish):
"2. Break-time: It is a house with inclined roof, stairs in the background, a door. The house is distressed, there is a coat hanger, a pair of wings are hanging from it, a doll is sleeping on a stars cushion. I have to make a cardboard box, cover it with newspaper, make the stairs, paint the interior, make the coat hanger, the wings, make the cushion (out of zodiac's fabric?), make the doll. The doll is going to have clay head, neck, trunk and extremities made of fabric filled with sand, hands and feet of clay. Make "celestial" dress for doll."

Describi la pieza en mi libreta, fue muy inusual porque lo que hago es bocetos de la idea, aun asi me deje llevar y comence a pensar como iba a hacer para traer a la realidad dicha descripcion (Transcripcion original en espanol):
"2. Break-time: Es una casa con techo angulado, con unas escaleras en la parte de atras, una puerta. La casa esta matizada, hay un perchero, del perchero cuelgan unas alas, una muneca esta dormida sobre un cojin de estrellas. Tengo que hacer la caja de carton, cubrirla de periodico, hacer la escalera, pintar el interior, hacer el perchero, las alas, hacer el cojin (de tela del zodiaco?) hacer la muneca. La muneca va a tener cabeza de clay, cuello, tronco y extremidades de tela rellenos de arena, manos y pies de clay. Hacer vestido "celeste" para la muneca."    

                                                
I started working based on the written instructions, however the piece evolved and more steps were needed, such as burlap and plaster of Paris. After these steps the house weighted almost 7 pounds!

Comence a trabajar en mis instrucciones, sin embargo la pieza se desarrollo y tuve que agregar pasos extras, como yute y yeso de Paris. Despues de estos pasos la casa peso casi 3 kilos y medio!

 Sometimes I don't take photos of the dolls' processes, this one was one of them. I got so immersed in her making that I did not recorded how I made the skeleton, the body, the sculpting, the making of the dress, etc. This is the first pic I got right before adding some hair. Still we can see the wire wrist showing thought the not-yet sewn sleeve.

Algunas veces no tomo fotos del proceso de las munecas, ella fue uno de estos casos, me meti tanto en su confeccion que no registre la manera en la que hice su esqueleto, el cuerpo, como esculpi su cara, la hechura del vestido, etc. Esta fue la primera foto que le tome justo antes de ponerle cabello. Aun asi podemos ver la muneca de alambre asomandose por la manga que estaba aun sin coser.

I designed the doll in a way that she will look asleep, her neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles were completely loose. Her clothing is made of vintage fabric, the cream colored dress is from my 75 year-old toddler dress that has given me countless little pieces for many dolls up until now.

Disene la muneca de tal manera que se viera dormida, su cuello, hombros, codos, munecas, caderas, rodillas y tobillos estan completamente sueltos. Su ropa esta hecha de tela antigua, el vestido color crema es un pedazo de mi vestido para nina que tiene 75 anios (la duena original del vestido tiene 77) y que me ha dado trozos para muchas munecas a la fecha.

The purpose of filling her with sand was to make her heavy and to give her body that feeling of an asleep person, also for making a link with the worldwide fairy tale theme of sand related to sleep and dream issues.

La rellene con arena para hacerla pesada y darle esa cualidad de soltura que tiene la gente dormida, tambien para crear un vinculo con el tema de los cuentos que relacionan la arena con el sueno, estas historias las encontramos a nivel mundial.

As final touch I added a blue ribbon around her waist and another holding her hair. It was funny to see that if I posed her she seemed to be really sleeping, and her body would "fall" and accommodate itself, unable to awake. When she was at the gallery, she was presented to the visitors, who could hold her on their hands, the 3 predominant opinions of the people about this girl were:

1. She is asleep.

2. She is dead.

3. She is drunk.

Le puse liston azul alrededor de su cintura y en su cabello. Era chistoso ver que no importaba de que manera la pusiera, siempre parecia seguir durmiendo y hasta se "acomodaba", incapaz de despertarse. Cuando estaba en la galeria la gente tuvo oportunidad de tenerla en las manos por breves momentos, las 3 opiniones mas frecuentes de la gente sobre la muneca eran:

1. Esta dormida.

2. Esta muerta.

3. Esta borracha.

Her head, hands, and feet were sculpted in LaDoll Clay, her hair is wool.

Su cabeza, manos y pies fueron esculpidos en LaDoll clay, su cabello es lana cruda.

The finished piece looked like this, the house turned out to be green with red roof, the cushion became a blanket, this one made of printed fabric, the motives were a big moon and the zodiac.

La pieza terminada se veia asi, la casa termino siendo verde con techo rojo, el cojin se transformo en una cobija, hecha de tela con dibujos de la luna y el zodiaco.

She fell asleep at the bottom of the stairs, as described.

Se quedo dormida en la base de las escaleras, como lo describi.

The coat hanger was made from drift wood that super storm Sandy left in the shores of the Connecticut River last year. The wings are machine quilted and painted with acrylics.

El perchero esta hecho de un pedazo de madera que el huracan Sandy dejo a su paso cuando nos visito el anio pasado. Lo encontre a las orillas del rio Connecticut. Las alitas son acolchadas y pintadas con acrilicos.

She represents us, we go out every morning and start our day, hour after hour we may encounter different people, we know some, others are strangers, but in any case we always make our best, trying to help out if needed, we may give a compliment to somebody, or words of relief, a good joke, or the right to pass to a pedestrian, a nice talk to the cashier at the shop, we make good deeds, and every time we do we get angel wings, at least is what I like to imagine, that we become angels when we do something good -big or small- for somebody.  When our day is over we go back home, tired and hungry, we take off our angel wings and fall asleep in the first place we find, because we are still humans and need a rest.

Ella nos representa a nosotros, cada dia empezamos nuestra rutina y encontramos gente conocida y extranos por igual, en cualquier caso siempre tratamos de ser amables, tratamos de ayudar si es necesario, damos consejo, o un cumplido, o consuelo, una broma, el derecho al paso a un peaton, amabilidad al cajero de la tienda, etc. Vamos por nuestro camino haciendo buenas obras, cada vez que hacemos esto nos salen alas de angel, al menos es lo que me gusta imaginar, que nos convertimos en angeles cuando hacemos algo bueno -grande o pequeno- por alquien mas. Cuando el dia se termina regresamos a casa, cansados y con hambre, nos quitamos nuestras alas y caemos dormidos en el primer lugar que encontramos, porque aun somos humanos y necesitamos un descanso.
