Coraline and her doll

Coraline is an unforgettable character. I have watched the movie more than ten times, and still have questions about it. Neil Gaiman is such a clever writer. I wish I could have written the story, I didn't , but still I can make the doll!!

Coraline es un personaje inolvidable. He visto la pelicula mas de diez veces y aun tengo preguntas. Neil Gaiman es super buen escritor, ya me hubiera gustado a mi haber escrito la historia, no fue asi, pero de todos modos puedo hacer la muneca!!
Acompanenme en el proceso de manufactura de Coraline y su muneca...

I made these 3 Coraline dolls, 2 Alices, and 2 Fridas at the same time. Here the Coralines got painted stockings, and yellow coats. Their eyes were made out of paper clay due to the fact that there are not buttons that size.

Hice estas 3 munecas Coraline al mismo tiempo que 2 Alicias y 2 Fridas. Aqui las 3 ya tienen sus calcetas pintadas y su impermeable amarillo. Sus ojos fueron hechos de paper clay debido a que no existen botones de ese tamano.

I hand sewn their coats, it was impossible to make them in the machine.

Cosi su ropa a mano, fue imposible hacerlas en la maquina.

Meanwhile, the Coraline girls were ready to get their characteristic short blue hair, I painted their faces, and clothes with acrylics. All of them have needle sculpted fingers, and stitched ears. I made three with different expressions.

Mientras tanto las 3 Coraline estaban listas para que se les pusiera cabello en su estilo muy particular, corto y azul. Anteriormente ya les habia pintado sus caras y ropa con acrilicos. Todas ellas tienen dedos esculpidos con aguja e hilo y orejas que fueron cosidas por separado. Hice cada una con expresion diferente.

Asi se veia justo antes de que le recortara el pelo un poco mas.

Frida Kalho, the second chapter

I went back to make Frida dolls, but this time they shrunk! Frida is now 3 inches tall, join me in the making of mini Frida, as well as I share the previews of other mini dolls such as Alice in Wonderland, and Coraline doll. Making different dolls at the same time was lots of fun.

Volvi a hacer munecas Frida, pero esta vez se encogieron! Ahora miden solo 7.7 cm. Acompanenme en el proceso mientras comparto la confeccion de otras mini munecas tales como Alicia en el pais de las maravillas y la muneca Coraline. Hacer munecas tan diversas al mismo tiempo fue muy divertido.

I chose to make 2 Alice dolls, 2 Fridas and 3 Coraline dolls. They were ready with white cotton petticoats. Coraline doll stand in the shadows (very much her style) in her yellow coat.

Decidi hacer 2 Alicias, 2 Fridas y 3 Coralines. Todas ellas estan listas con petticoats de algodon. Coraline esta atras, en la penumbra (muy a su estilo) con su impermeable amarillo.

 

One of the Fridas was going to wear the traditional dress from the Itsmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, black skirt with lace, and black embroidered blouse (this one was hand painted). Clothes are sewn to her body due to her size.

Una de las Fridas iba a portar el traje tipico del Itsmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, falda negra con encaje y blusa negra bordada (en este caso pintada a mano). La ropa fue cosida a su cuerpo debido a lo pequeno de su talla.

The other Frida was going to wear a yellow blouse with a red motive and black skirt with lace. She had hair already! Her hair was needle felted strand by strand.

La otra Frida iba a llevar una blusa amarilla con un motivo en rojo y falda negra con encaje. Esta muneca ya tenia pelo! Su cabello fue colocado con agujas de afelpar fibra por fibra.

 Both Fridas with their costumes ready, they went to take a walk before going to the hairdresser.

Ambas Fridas con sus vestidos listos, pareciera que se fueron a caminar antes de ir con el estilista.

Newborn Baby Bunnies

Since I moved to the USA I noticed the super abundance of rabbits as soon as spring and -especially- Easter approach. In Mexico, my native country there is not such tradition. I was caught by the look of the baby ones, maybe because my own son. Then I decided to make some baby bunnies with their eggshell. I started developing the idea from rabbits' drawings and translated that to a pattern, then to a three dimensional form. This is the process.

Desde que me mude a los Estados Unidos me percate de la abundancia de conejos por donde quiera tan pronto la primavera y especialmente el Dia de Pascua se aproximan. En Mexico, mi pais natal, no tenemos esa tradicion. Me gustaban especialmente las representaciones de bebes, tal vez debido a mi hijo. Asi que decidi hacer algunos conejos bebes con su cascaron de huevo. Comence a desarrollar la idea a partir de dibujos de conejos, luego hice un patron y de ahi consegui la forma tridimensional en tela. Este es el proceso.

 The finished bunny had a very nice size, it looked like a newborn baby bunny sleeping on my hand.

El tamano resulto perfecto, el conejo terminado se veia como si fuera un recien nacido, durmiendo en mi mano. 

I started making the eggshell, which was going to be the bunny's crib. Little by little I saw that I could make more accessories for the bunny, such as a crib support, pillow, blanket, and more baby siblings!

Despues de que tuve el conejo listo me puse a hacer su cascaron para que fuera su cuna, poco a poco vi que podia tener mas accesorios, como una base para su cuna, almohada y cobija, y tambien mas hermanos!

I made a big bunch of newborns (after all they are bunnies, right?) and they looked like that, I had a bunny nursery!

Hice una camada de conejos recien nacidos (despues de todo son conejos, no?). Todos juntos parecian como salidos de los cuneros de la zona de maternidad de un hospital!

THE MAKING OF MINI BLACK IZANNAH WALKER INSPIRED DOLL

My idea was just to have lots of fun and explore the beauty of Izannah Walker dolls, in a small size, because my 2 year-old-boy is too much action now. I started designing the doll, and when I had to cut the patterns I decided I wanted to cut 3 just at once. Yes, I made 3 mini dolls, 3 1/2 inches tall approximately.
After finishing the sculpting of the second doll, soon realized that she was special, this particular doll was all painted, but something was not right, I started watching her close and I suddenly saw the features of my friend Tanya on her! I met Tanya last year at the Play Group, her son and mine are almost the same age, 7 months apart maybe. She is a black woman, very nice, stunning, very tall, very funny, clever, and makes everybody laugh at our reunions.
Then I realized she was on the wrong skin, I painted her darker and she looked perfect this time. Without really trying I just had made a black Izannah and loved her.

Mi idea era divertirme de lo lindo mientras exploraba la belleza de las munecas creadas por Izannah Walker, en tamano pequeno, porque mi hijo de dos anios apenas y me deja tiempo para otras cosas. Disene la muneca, y cuando corte los patrones decidi que iba a hacer 3 al mismo tiempo. Asi que las hice, y median mas o menos 9 cm. Despues de esculpir la segunda muneca me di cuenta de que era especial, esta muneca en particular ya estaba pintada, pero algo no estaba bien con ella. La observe un rato y me di cuenta que tenia las facciones de mi amiga Tanya! Conoci a Tanya el anio pasado en el grupo de juego, su hijo y el mio son casi de la misma edad, con 7 meses de diferencia tal vez. Tanya es de raza negra, my amable, guapa, muy alta, chistosa, y hace reir a todo mundo en nuestras reuniones.
Ahi fue cuando me di cuenta que estaba en la piel equivocada, la pinte mas oscura y esta vez se vio perfecta. Sin realmente tratar, acababa de hacer una Izannah de raza negra y me gusto bastante.

I made her clothes, and sew them on place one by one, permanently, due to her small size is impossible to try to make them removable. 

Hice su ropa, y la cosi una por una en su lugar de manera permanente, debido a su pequeno tamano era imposible hacer que la ropa se pudiera quitar o poner.

She looked like this before I shipped her to Philadelphia, where she will have her home from now on. She is your girl now Sue! Von Voyage Izannah!

Asi se veia antes de que la enviara a Filadelfia, donde va a ser su hogar de ahora de adelante. Es tu nina ahora Sue! Bien viaje Izannah!

Making mini Izannah Walker doll

I love Izannah Walker dolls, they have a kind of peace in their faces. This time I wanted to make a mini Izannah, she measures 3 3/4 inches, and I followed the procedure of making a stuffed cloth body, and sculpting her head, hands, and feet in paper clay.

Me gustan bastante las munecas Izannah Walker, su cara posee cierta paz que inspira. Esta vez hice una Izannah miniatura, solo alcanza 3 3/4 pulgadas, mas o menos 9 cm. Segui el procedimiento de hacerle su cuerpo de tela y esculpir su cabeza, manos y pies con paper clay.

I made 3 of them, I was so happy! One after another.
Hice 3 munecas al mismo tiempo, estaba tan contenta! Una tras otra.

I started working with the one in the middle, and she became a very pretty little lady.

Empece a trabajar con la de en medio, y se convirtio en una munequita hermosa.

I made her clothes from an original dress from 1855, following the traditional Victorian sewing, which I deeply love. The Victorian sewing is highly professional, they did not have machines, and every detail is outstanding. A dress this size was going to be impossible to make in a machine, that was out of question. The Victorians gave me all what I needed, and I got a dress with no raw edges, no double cloth layers, everything with the precision of a Swiss watch. A petticoat and drawers in vintage, sturdy cotton fabric finished her clothing nicely. I hand painted the pieces before sewing with textile paints, and gave them a wash to give them a warm worn look. I wanted Izannah to look like she has been playing during 200 years and still be alive and happy.

Hice su ropa basandome en un vestido original de 1855, siguiendo la tradicional costura Victoriana, la cual realmente adoro. La costura Victoriana es de alta calidad, aquellas mujeres no tenian maquinas, y cada detalle es preciso. Iba a ser imposible coser un vestido de este tamano en la maquina, eso estaba fuera de duda. Las costureras victorianas me dieron precisamente lo que estaba buscando, y obtuve un vestido sin orillas deshilachadas, sin tanta tela doblada, todo con la precision de un reloj suizo. Una faldilla y calzones de manga larga, ambos hechos en tela de algodon antigua terminaron su atuendo. Antes de coser pinte la tela a mano con colores textiles, y los lave para que tomaran una apariencia usada. Queria que Izannah se viera como si hubiera estado jugando por 200 anios y aun siguiera viva y contenta.

I had to sew in place each piece of her clothing, due to her small size that made impossible to use buttons, hooks, I did not want to use velcro, and this one was too thick for this size tough. Then I took a picture of each of the clothes, before sewing them forever on Izannah.

Tuve que cerrar cada pieza de su vestimenta; debido a su pequeno tamano me fue imposible usar botones, o ganchos, y no quise usar velcro, ademas de por si era muy grueso para ella. Asi que tome una foto por cada una de sus prendas, las cuales iba cosiendo de manera permanente.

Izannah was sold last week on E-Bay during a very exciting bidding, and right now she is traveling to Florida, where she will have warmer winters from now on. It was a lot of fun to make her. Regards, Jean!

Izannah fue adquirida en E-Bay la semana pasada durante una subasta bastante emocionante, y ahora viaja hasta la Florida, donde va a tener inviernos mas calidos. Me diverti mucho al hacerla. Cuidala mucho Jean!
