Newborn Baby Bunnies

Since I moved to the USA I noticed the super abundance of rabbits as soon as spring and -especially- Easter approach. In Mexico, my native country there is not such tradition. I was caught by the look of the baby ones, maybe because my own son. Then I decided to make some baby bunnies with their eggshell. I started developing the idea from rabbits' drawings and translated that to a pattern, then to a three dimensional form. This is the process.

Desde que me mude a los Estados Unidos me percate de la abundancia de conejos por donde quiera tan pronto la primavera y especialmente el Dia de Pascua se aproximan. En Mexico, mi pais natal, no tenemos esa tradicion. Me gustaban especialmente las representaciones de bebes, tal vez debido a mi hijo. Asi que decidi hacer algunos conejos bebes con su cascaron de huevo. Comence a desarrollar la idea a partir de dibujos de conejos, luego hice un patron y de ahi consegui la forma tridimensional en tela. Este es el proceso.

 The finished bunny had a very nice size, it looked like a newborn baby bunny sleeping on my hand.

El tamano resulto perfecto, el conejo terminado se veia como si fuera un recien nacido, durmiendo en mi mano. 

I started making the eggshell, which was going to be the bunny's crib. Little by little I saw that I could make more accessories for the bunny, such as a crib support, pillow, blanket, and more baby siblings!

Despues de que tuve el conejo listo me puse a hacer su cascaron para que fuera su cuna, poco a poco vi que podia tener mas accesorios, como una base para su cuna, almohada y cobija, y tambien mas hermanos!

I made a big bunch of newborns (after all they are bunnies, right?) and they looked like that, I had a bunny nursery!

Hice una camada de conejos recien nacidos (despues de todo son conejos, no?). Todos juntos parecian como salidos de los cuneros de la zona de maternidad de un hospital!

Cloth Doll Explorations: Cats and Bunnies

After my first attempt at doll making I tried to design something from my own. I picked up the figure of a cat and a bunny, and humanize them a little bit, so they could have legs and arms attached to a long body, but still they were going to keep their animal features as much as I could.

Despues de mi primer intento en la contruccion de munecas trate de disenar algo propio, asi que escogi la figura de un gato y de un conejo, los humanice un poco para que tuvieran piernas y brazos  cosidos a un cuerpo un poco mas largo. Sin embargo trate de que mantuvieran sus rasgos animales lo mas que se pudiera.

When they were finished I looked at them thinking that they should have something extra, so I thought of the sea and what it means to live in a town like New London, Connecticut. Then I started designing some life preservers and painted on the cats and bunnies an antique style sailor t-shirt.

Cuando los termine y los mire pense que deberian tener algo extra, asi que me inspire en en mar y en el pueblo donde vivo, New London Connecticut. Basado en esto empece a disenar unos salvavidas y les pinte una playera de marinero estilo antiguo.

New London Connecticut was a former whaling town, and there is a lot of imagery and inspiration about the theme, also one finds the same feeling in the neighbor town of Mystic, home of the Mystic Seaport Museum. But this is going to be the main theme of another blog, thanks for your visit and have a nice day!
