The legend of Black Mammy Doll

Hi there everyone, I have left alone my crusader dolls, letting the clay and textile paint get dry before I kept moving, and I started a new project, that one of designing my black Mammy doll. There are a lot of ideas and actual mammy dolls all over the internet, many of them really expensive, specially if they are more than 100 years old, they are collectibles highly appreciated I could see.

The mammy doll I wanted to create was a very strong woman, a true representation of the person that takes care of the house and raises the children, and does not get crazy in the intent. I had many different opinions, one of my business partners told me she was not going to take them in her shop because they were enslaved, and that was a part of their History they are not proud of (remember I am Mexican, the friends I talked to are Americans). Other friend told me not all black people were slaves, many of them lived a free life, and even had business and did pretty well. Another one told me her family kept a black mammy doll for generations, and she remembers her sitting by the living room at her grandma's house, which brings her fond memories and happy feelings.
Any way, I was not going to forget about them, and started the process of designing the patterns, which looked like that:

Hola a todos, deje en paz por un rato a los cruzados, mientras que se seca la arcilla y la pintura textil, despues podre moverme a la siguiente fase, mientras tanto empece un nuevo proyecto que ya tenia en mente, el de disenar mi propia Mammy doll, hay muchas fotos de estas munecas por todo el internet, algunas de ellas muy caras si es que tienen mas de 100 anios, son piezas de coleccion muy apreciadas.

La Mammy que queria crear tenia que ser el reflejo de una mujer muy fuerte, la representacion de la persona que se encarga de la casa y de criar a los ninos sin volverse loca en el intento. Escuche opiniones diferentes mientras que desarrollaba la idea, me gusta ser abierta a las opiniones del mercado.
Una de mis socias me dijo que no podia aceptar estas munecas en su tienda porque son la representacion de la servidumbre de raza negra y que esta gente estaba esclavizada y que es parte de su historia de la cual no estan orgullosos (recuerden que son mexicana, los amigos que entreviste son estadounidenses), otro me dijo que no toda la gente de color fue esclavizada, que muchos eran libres e incluso hacian negocios y les fue bien, otra mas me dijo que en su familia han tenido una muneca de estas por generaciones, y que la recuerda sentada en la sala de la casa de su abuela, lo que le trae memorias entranables de su infancia.
De todas maneras, no me iba a olvidar de ellas y empece el proceso de disenar los patrones:

When I started drafting the pattern I noticed that the doll just kept getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger. I had to scan the patter of this one to get two smaller sizes.

Cuando empece a disenar el patron me di cuenta que la muneca empezo a hacerse mas y mas grande. Tuve que escanear el patron de esta muneca para obtener dos tallas mas chicas.

Well, that's all, my quality control manager is asking for his pajamas, finally!!

Eso es todo lo que puedo escribir, mi jefe de control de calidad me esta pidiendo su piyama, al fin!!

Crusader Dolls Part III

This week I was working with paper-clay, it is very interesting what one can do with it, the only thing that hits my nerves is the fact that it is necessary to wait until it is dry for certain things. Really it is a way of mastering patience. I worked on the crusaders' helmet and kept messing with the fresh clay that I already had modelled, then I understood I had to work in steps and let the clay dry before I could keep going. This is as far as I could get:

Esta semana trabaje con arcilla de papel, es muy padre todo lo que uno puede hacer con este material, lo unico que no me gusta es que es necesario dejar que se seque para poder seguir trabajando en la pieza, por lo menos un dia. Veo el trabajo con este material como una manera de practicar la paciencia. Trabaje en el casco de los cruzados y por mas que trataba de ser cuidadosa seguia aranando y deformando sin querer la arcilla que ya habia moldeado en su lugar, asi que entendi que tenia que trabajar en episodios y dejar que el material se secara antes de seguir con otra cosa. Esto es lo mas que pude hacer:

They are going to have different helmet styles because they are from different orders, the left one is a Hospitaller, the right one, an English knight. Still, the helmets' primary structure looks the same at the beginning.

Ambos van a tener diferente estilo de casco porque sus ordenes no son la misma, el de la izquierda es un Hospitalario, el de la derecha un caballero ingles. Aun asi la base del casco se ve igual al principio.

Profile/Perfil

I did not want to attach the clay to the nose, it is a needle sculpted nose and I want it to show, even tough the knight has a helmet on. Inside the nose protection there is a wire that prevents the little piece from breaking off.

No quiese pegar la arcilla a la nariz, esta fue esculpida con aguja e hilo y quiero que se siga viendo a pesar de que el caballero tenga casco. Dentro de la protection para la nariz puse un alambre que previene la rotura de la pequena pieza.

Meanwhile, I got them their tunics.

Tambien les corte sus tunicas.

The Templar knight tried his clothes on, he looks happy on them.

El caballero Templario se probo su ropa, hasta se ve mas contento.

Crusader Dolls Part II

Kingdom of Heaven is one of the best movies I have seen. Director Ridley Scott made a great job as he did with Gladiator. I got a big deal of information from this movie for making the dolls, one can see clearly how tunics are made, how helmets look like, even the beard and hair style from that time, etc. I was specially pleased with the disc two included in the dvd's special edition, with an extensive documentary about the Crusades and lots of historic, and visual reference. I looked at tombstones, medieval drawings, statues, and coins from the period, but watching these dvds was much more fun -for my son too- specially watching the horses in action.

La pelicula Kingdom of Heaven es una de las mejores peliculas que he visto, el director Ridley Scott se lucio tal y como lo hizo previamente con Gladiador. Obtuve bastante informacion de esta cinta para hacer mis munecos, pude ver como estaban hechas las tunicas, como se veian los cascos, incluso como se arreglaban la barba y el cabello en esa epoca. Me gusto en especial el disco 2 que viene incluido en el dvd edicion especial, incluye un documental sobre las Cruzadas y bastante referencia historica y visual. Tambien estudie tumbas, dibujos medievales, monedas y estatuas del medievo, sin embargo ver estos dvds fue mucho mas divertido -para mi hijo tambien- especialmente el ver los caballos en accion.

I painted them in black acrylics, leaving in white the faces and hands, then I represented the chain mail using dimensional paint, and metallic wax. Finally they were sealed with exterior polyurethan varnish. They were pretty hard core after all!

Los pinte en acrilico negro dejando la tela en blanco en las areas ocupadas por la cara y las manos, replique la cota de malla con pintura dimensional y cera metalica, cuando todo se seco los selle con poliuretano para exteriores. Eran muy rudos despues de todo!

These guys got ther faces, I see the Templar has an "I am bad"-looking face, the first time I painted his face he looked even more mean, then I smoothed his features, and that was the most I could do for him. I think I was focused on the bad reputation of the Templars. Templar Knights were known by their greed, and had a very bad end at the hands of king Philip IV of France. The Hospitaller doll, however looks more peacefull, the Hospitaller Knights were more moderate, and their order lasted for many years after the lost of Jerusalem, and did not end in disgrace, such as the Templars.

Finalmente les pinte la cara, me di cuenta que el Templario se veia muy malo la primera vez que lo pinte, asi que le suavice los rasgos y eso fue todo lo que pude hacer por el. Creo que me influyo el hecho de saber que los caballeros templarios tenian muy mala reputacion, eran ambiciosos y acabaron muy mal, ejecutados por ordenes del rey Felipe IV de Francia. El muneco Hospitalario tiene una cara mas pacifica, los Hospitalarios eran mas moderados y su orden duro por muchos anios despues de la caida de Jerusalen a manos de Saladin, la orden no termino en desgracia como les paso a los templarios.

He has been telling me not to make him a Hospitaller, but a knight from Richard I Lion Heart's army, so I will listen and make his clothing and helmet according to his wishes. He is going to have button-jointed arms in order to make them poseable, here I am using a very long needle and very strong thread.

Este caballero me ha dicho que no quiere ser un Hospitalario, sino un caballero del ejercito del rey Ricardo I Corazon de Leon, asi que voy a hacerle caso y confeccionare su tunica y casco de acuerdo a sus deseos. Voy a coser los brazos a los cuerpos usando botones para que puedan tener movilidad. Para coser este tipo de articulacion se usa una aguja muy larga e hilo muy resistente.

Both the Hospitaller(left) and Knight(right) have a first coat of paper mache to give a base to the helmet, which is going to be made of paper clay.

Al hospitalario (izquierda) y al caballero (derecha) se les ha aplicado una primera capa de papel mache en la cabeza para que sirva de base al casco, el cual va a ser hecho de arcilla de papel.

New Crusader Dolls

The holydays are gone finally, I went trought 4 birthday parties, Christmast, and New Year, without making much of my doll making work, just thinking about how I could scape to the studio and do something. I wish my hands worked as fast as my mind.
One of these days I got the idea of making crusaders, these guys with red crosses and nice looking helmets and swords. I did not know anything about them really, so I read two good books about them and discovered that they were organized in different groups, among them the Templars, the Hospitallers, and the Teutonic Order.

Los dias festivos finalmente se terminaron, pase por 4 fiestas de cumpleanos, Navidad y Anio Nuevo sin poder hacer mucho de mi trabajo, solo me la pasaba pensando en como me podria escapar al estudio y tener un poco de tiempo para mis proyectos. Me gustaria que mis manos trabajaran a la misma velocidad que mi mente.

Uno de esos dias se me ocurrio en hacer cruzados, aquellos hombres con cruces rojas en la ropa, cascos bonitos y espadas; no sabia mucho de ellos realmente, asi que me lei dos libros muy buenos acerca de las cruzadas y descubri que estaban agrupados en diferentes organizaciones, entre ellos los caballeros Templarios, los caballeros Hospitalarios y los caballeros Teutones.

The Templars wore red crosses on white clothes, and their helmets were very square, the Hospitallers wore white crosses on black clothes, their helmets had more variety in their styles, and the Teutons wore black crosses on white clothes, these were very agressive looking, and their organization had the policy of eternal crusading, which means they were going to keep fighting forever, and looking forward to it. 

Los Templarios portaban cruces rojas sobre tunicas y capas blancas, sus cascos eran muy cuadrados. Los Hospitalarios llevaban cruces blancas sobre tunicas y capas negras, los cascos eran mas variados, y los Teutones usaban cruces negras sobre tunicas y capas blancas, estos ultimos se veian muy agresivos y su organizacion tenia la consigna de cruzadas eternas, lo que significa que estos caballeros lucharian permanentemente.

After surfing the internet I got enough material to design my patterns, and I got something like this:

Despues de recorrer el internet en busca de material para disenar mis patrones acabe con algo asi:

Unstuffed muslin pieces

Piezas de muselina sin rellenar.

Stuffed pieces, arms have needle sculpted fingers, and elbows.

Piezas ya rellenas, los brazos se pueden doblar en los codos y esculpi con aguja los dedos de las manos.

Close up of the bodies, I decided to keep the head attached to the body, the two at the left are Hospitallers, the one at the right is a Templar. The pointy heads of the Hospitallers are the base for their helmets.

Decidi que la cabeza y el cuerpo deberian ir en el mismo patron, para darle mayor solidez y fuerza a las figuras. Los dos de la izquierda son Hospitalarios, el de la derecha es un Templario, la cabeza puntiaguda de los Hospitalarios me da la base para hacer sus cascos.

This was just the first chapter, I hope my toddler boy (quality control manager) gives me more rest to finish them.

Esto solo fue el principio, espero que mi hijo (my jefe de control de calidad) me de mas tiempo de terminarlos.
