I could have called this painting "Self portrait as Matlaczihuatl", however Frida just called it "Self portrait".

Pude haber nombrado esta pintura "Autorretrato como Matlaczihuatl", sin embargo Frida solo lo llamo "Autorretrato"

In the painting Frida presents herself once more in the Yalalag outfit, one of her favorites. Yalalag is a town located in Oaxaca. I guess Frida liked Oaxacan outfits for a variety of reasons, first because Diego liked them, second, because these outfits are among the most spectacular in Mexico, third, because her mother was from Oaxaca.

En la pintura Frida se plasma a si misma nuevamente en el traje tipico de Yalalag que era uno de sus favoritos, Yalalag es un pueblo ubicado en Oaxaca. Creo que a Frida le gustaban los trajes oaxaquenos por una variedad de razones, primero porque a Diego le gustaban, segundo porque estos atuendos se cuentan entre los mas espectaculares de Mexico, tercero, porque su madre era de Oaxaca.

Her necklace is based on that of the Aztec goddess Matlaczihuatl, she was the goddess of the ocean, and wore a necklace made of seashells. At some point the shells become fang-like pieces, warning us about the agressive nature of Matlaczihuatl. The red embroidered symbol means "rain" (Quiahu in nahuatl).

Su collar esta basado en el de la diosa azteca del oceano Matlaczihuat, este estaba hecho de conchas marinas, en determinado momento las piezas se transforman en algo que parecen colmillos, indicando que la diosa posee una naturaleza agresiva. El simbolo bordado en rojo significa "lluvia" (Quiahu en nahuatl).

 The net on her head is for fishing sea creatures as well as men's souls, she was a men eater. Although she does not have flowers on her head in the original portrait, I decided to add two. Red looks great on purple.

 La red en su cabeza es para pescar criaturas marinas lo mismo que almas de hombres, la diosa era una comedora de hombres. A pesar de que no tiene flores en la cabeza en la pintura original, decidi agregarle dos. Rojo se ve muy bien sobre morado.

I don't think I am going to make more Frida dolls, I want each one of them to be one of a kind. They are the last of the series, and won't be replicated. The chapter is finally close! Thanks for visiting!

"Self portrait with hand earrings"

There she was, looking at us proud of herself and her accomplishments as artist, but still hurt because her personal life was not what she wanted. Frida paints both her success and pain in a single image.

Ahi esta Frida, orgullosa de si misma y de su triunfo como artista, al mismo tiempo lastimada porque su vida sentimental esta lejos de ser lo que ella quisiera. Pinta su exito y su dolor al mismo tiempo.

The making of the doll required to make much more flowers than any of the others, I used the old technique of bread dough for the flowers, and painted them with acrylics, for the hands I used paper-clay.

La confeccion de esta muneca requirio hacer muchas mas flores, use la vieja tecnica de migajon para realizarlas y despues las pinte con acrilicos, para las manos use paper-clay.

I used wool for her hair, and needle felted strand by strand, then I braided it in the traditional Aztec style, and put on the flowers.

Use una aguja para afelpar para colocar lana en su cabeza, ya puesto le trenze el cabello al estilo Azteca y le  anadi las flores.

I got the opportunity to use a very special vintage fabric for her shawl, the necklace was made of modeling paste and acrylics, I decided to omit the blood drops in her neck, her blouse is a very simple white cotton piece with yellow embroidery.

Tuve la oportunidad de usar una tela antigua muy especial para hacer su chal, el collar fue hecho de pasta para modelar y acrilicos, decidi omitir las gotas de sangre en su cuello. Su blusa es una prenda simple de algodon bordada a mano en amarillo.

What a great doll, she is 12 inches tall and look as proud as in the painting. Two buttons in her head allow her to be displayed in a wall.

Una verdadera belleza, mide 12 pulgadas y se ve tan arrogante como en la pintura. Atras de la cabeza tiene dos botones que le permiten ser colgada en la pared.

Frida had an exhibition in Paris in 1939, at the opening was the great Pablo Picasso, he approached Frida and told her in Spanish: "Senora, soy su mas ferviente admirador, por favor acepte este humilde presente" ("Mam, I am your most fervent admirer, please accept this humble present") What he gave her were the peculiar hand earrings that she later painted in the self portrait. They were so unique that even Diego Rivera painted them in another portrait of Frida.

Frida tuvo una exhibicion en Paris en 1939, el gran Pablo Picasso acudio a la inauguracion y se aproximo a Frida diciendole "Senora, soy su mas ferviente admirador, por favor acepte este humilde presente". Lo que le dio fue el par de aretes de manos que despues pintaria en su autorretrato. Los aretes eran tan peculiares que hasta Diego Rivera los pinto en otro retrato de Frida.

Self portrait as tehuana, or Diego in my thoughts

Autorretrato como tehuana o Diego en mis pensamientos, Frida Kalho, 1943

This particular portrait is among my favorites, Frida's work reveals maturity and mastery of the medium, we have to remember she was a self made artist, who learned from experience rather than instructors or formal education. Often she followed her husband's technical advice, later she surpassed Diego Rivera's skill and legacy.

Este retrato en particular se cuenta entre mis favoritos, el trabajo de Frida revela madurez y maestria de la tecnica, recordemos que fue una artista practica, quien aprendio de la experiencia en vez de instructores o educacion formal. A menudo siguio los consejos tecnicos de su esposo, tiempo despues sobrepaso a este en importancia y legado.

I got to a point where each of the five dolls I made started needing different accessories to become unique. The doll that got to be the Tehuana was almost entirely dress in white. I got her skirt, underskirt, and blouse ready, next step was to get the head-dress. I made it from cream color linen with white hand painted flowers, hand painted fabric, and a muslin ruffle.

Llego un momento en que cada una de las cinco munecas que habia hecho comenzaron a necesitar diferentes accesorios para convertirse en la pintura que habia escogido. La muneca que seria la Tehuana estaba vestida casi por completo de blanco. Hice su falda, fondo y blusa, el siguiente paso era el tocado. Lo hice de lino color crema, sobre el cual pinte flores blancas, despues lo cosi a una tira de tela rosa pintada y aliste una pieza de muselina plisada.

Prior to stitching the head dress I needle felted her hair, and braided it. None of my dolls have bald spots, all of them have hair all over and can be restyled in desired. The face was hand painted with acrylics.

Antes de coserle el tocado me di a la tarea de colocarle el cabello con una aguja para afelpar y le hice trenzas. Ninguna de mis munecas esta calva, todas tienen cabello y se puede arreglar de otra forma si asi se quiere. La cara fue pintada con acrilicos.

She was almost ready, I needed to get the flowers for her head ready. She looked like a princess though.

Casi estaba lista, lo unico que faltaba era hacerle las flores que van en la cabeza, aun asi ya se veia como princesa.

Frida doll ready to go! I omitted Diego Rivera's portrait in her forehead because I dislike him, and did not want to see his face on any of my dolls.

Frida lista! Omiti el retrato de Diego Rivera en su frente porque no me cae bien, no queria ver su cara en ninguna de mis munecas.

This is the traditional gala dress from Tehuantepec, this clothing is for special occasions, the women take a year to make their costume, everything is hand embroidered with high skill. A whole dress like this is around US$1,200.00  Really a cheap price for such art pieces.

Este es el vestido de gala de Tehuantepec, la vestimenta es para ocasiones especiales, las mujeres toman hasta un anio en terminar un traje asi, todo esta bordado a mano con gran tecnica. Un traje completo cuesta mas o menos $12,000.00 en peso mexicano. Realmente barato considerando que son obras de arte.

The story of the head dress or "resplandor" is as follows, one day Oaxacan natives discovered at the beach the remnants of a shipwreck, between the debris they found the trunk of an European woman. When they saw the petticoat they decided it looked good on the head. Since then the "resplandor" started developing until becoming the spectacular piece we see today on the heads of Oaxacan women during important celebrations. 

La historia del tocado o "resplandor" es la siguiente; un dia nativos oaxaquenos descubrieron los restos de un naufragio y entre ellos el baul de una europea, cuando lo abrieron descubrieron un fondo y decidieron que se veia bien en la cabeza. Desde entonces el "resplandor" comenzo a desarrollarse hasta convertirse en la espectacular pieza que ahora portan las mujeres de Oaxaca durante festividades importantes.

This painting is very impressing, it talks about Frida facing divorce, loneliness, and physical pain; later she remarried Diego Rivera in December 1940. Also is one of very few where she paints herself in frontal position, most of her paintings are three quarter portraits.

La pintura es impresionante, nos habla de una Frida sola, divorciada, llena de dolor fisico; poco despues, en diciembre de 1940 volvio a casarse con Diego Rivera. Esta es una de las pocas ocasiones en las que se pinta de frente, la mayoria de sus retratos fueron ejecutados en posicion de tres cuartos.

It was quite a challenge to paint such a strong frontal portrait, once I was finished I remember telling myself how sad this particular doll seemed to be, compared to the others. For this portrait Frida did not focus on painting embroidered blouses, but in the intricacy of the thorn necklace.

Fue un gran desafio pintar un retrato frontal de sentimiento tan fuerte, una vez que termine y la vi junto con las demas munecas, oi decirme a mi misma lo triste que se veia esta muneca. En este retrato Frida no se intereso en pintar una blusa bordada, sino en la minucia del collar de espinas.

This is the thorn necklace before it was wrapped around Frida's neck, it was made of twine, modelling paste and acrylic paint. In the painting looks too thight, it seems to choke Frida, for the doll I made something more moderate.

Este es el collar de espinas antes de que se lo pusiera a Frida, esta hecho de cuerda, pasta para modelar y pintura acrilica. En la pintura se ve muy apretado, casi a punto del extrangulamiento, para la muneca decidi hacer algo mas moderado.

The black hummingbird is made of paper clay and painted with acrylics. In Mexico the hummingbird stands for love, single people go to the markets to get stuffed hummingbirds, and believe the bird will bring them love, the folk name for such an item is "chupamirto". Nowadays this tradition is almost extinct (good news for the hummingbirds, of course). In Frida's case, the black hummingbird stand for a dead love.

El colibri negro esta hecho de arcilla de papel, pintado con acrilicos. En Mexico el colibri tiene el significado de amor, la gente soltera solia ir a los mercados y comprar colibries disecados con el proposito de encontrar pareja(s), a tales amuletos se les llamaba "chupamirtos", hoy en dia la tradicion esta casi extinta (buenas noticias para los colibries por supuesto). En el caso de Frida el colibri negro significa un amor muerto.

The hairdo is something to look at, it is the traditional Aztec style, still used in the Tehuantepec Isthmus today. This is kind of weird, because the native population over there is Zapotec, although they shared things in common like fashion. The brooches on Frida's braids are silver butterflies, she had a pair like that in her collection.

El peinado es muy detallado, es el estilo original de las mujeres Aztecas, aun usado en el Itsmo de Tehuantepec, esto es medio raro porque la poblacion nativa de la region es Zapoteca, aun asi ambas culturas compartian cosas en comun, sobre todo en el atuendo. Los prendedores en las trenzas de Frida eran mariposas de plata, la pintora tuvo un par asi en su coleccion de joyeria.

Frida with whole outfit, her simplicity only adds more beauty to the overal figure. I omitted the monkey and cat that appear in the painting because they are behind the artist, without any contact with her, acting like shadows of her sorrow, I though she had enough already!

Frida con su atuendo completo, la simpleza de la vestimenta solo le anade belleza a la figura, decidi no hacer el mono ni el gato porque se encuentran atras de la artista, no entran en real contacto con ella, solo son espectadores de su dolor, creo que Frida ya habia tenido demasiado!

Frida Kalho, the second chapter

I went back to make Frida dolls, but this time they shrunk! Frida is now 3 inches tall, join me in the making of mini Frida, as well as I share the previews of other mini dolls such as Alice in Wonderland, and Coraline doll. Making different dolls at the same time was lots of fun.

Volvi a hacer munecas Frida, pero esta vez se encogieron! Ahora miden solo 7.7 cm. Acompanenme en el proceso mientras comparto la confeccion de otras mini munecas tales como Alicia en el pais de las maravillas y la muneca Coraline. Hacer munecas tan diversas al mismo tiempo fue muy divertido.

I chose to make 2 Alice dolls, 2 Fridas and 3 Coraline dolls. They were ready with white cotton petticoats. Coraline doll stand in the shadows (very much her style) in her yellow coat.

Decidi hacer 2 Alicias, 2 Fridas y 3 Coralines. Todas ellas estan listas con petticoats de algodon. Coraline esta atras, en la penumbra (muy a su estilo) con su impermeable amarillo.

 

One of the Fridas was going to wear the traditional dress from the Itsmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, black skirt with lace, and black embroidered blouse (this one was hand painted). Clothes are sewn to her body due to her size.

Una de las Fridas iba a portar el traje tipico del Itsmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, falda negra con encaje y blusa negra bordada (en este caso pintada a mano). La ropa fue cosida a su cuerpo debido a lo pequeno de su talla.

The other Frida was going to wear a yellow blouse with a red motive and black skirt with lace. She had hair already! Her hair was needle felted strand by strand.

La otra Frida iba a llevar una blusa amarilla con un motivo en rojo y falda negra con encaje. Esta muneca ya tenia pelo! Su cabello fue colocado con agujas de afelpar fibra por fibra.

 Both Fridas with their costumes ready, they went to take a walk before going to the hairdresser.

Ambas Fridas con sus vestidos listos, pareciera que se fueron a caminar antes de ir con el estilista.
