This was one of the 5 pictures I chose for making a Frida Kalho doll -with monkey dolls-. She painted herself in the company of four monkeys, for Frida they stand for polygamy. Her husband Diego cheated on her frequently, and she paid him with the same coin.

Esta fue una de las 5 pinturas que elegi para hacer una muneca de Frida Kalho -con los monos incluidos-. Aqui se pinto en conpania de cuatro monos, para ella los animalitos significaban poligamia, su esposo Diego le fue infiel frecuentemente y ella le pago con la misma moneda.

The symbol OLLIN was embroidered in a muslin blouse, the word ollin means "movement" in nahuatl, which originally was the official language of the Aztecs.

El simbolo OLLIN fue bordado en la blusa de muselina. La palabra ollin significa "movimiento" en nahuatl, que fue el idioma oficial de los Aztecas.

 I made the monkeys in muslin and painted them with black acrylics. I chose to make only the two monkeys that are in Frida's arms, the others seem too distant, and hiding in the leaves.

Hice los monos en muselina y los pinte con acrilico negro, decidi hacer solo los monos que estan con Frida, los otros dos se ven muy lejanos y escondidos entre las hojas.

 They have wire inside their long limbs, I used buttons for attaching them to the body.
Ambos tienen alambre en los miembros, use botones para coserlos a los cuerpos.

 These monkeys are spider monkeys, they are small, skinny, very agile, their limbs and tail are extra long, and very intelligent. Frida kept some of them as pets, she was very fond of exotical animals. Nowadays the spider monkey is almost extinct in its natural habitat.

Este mono en particular es el llamado mono arana, son pequenos, delgaditos, muy agiles, sus miembros y cola son muy largos y son muy inteligentes. Frida tuvo varios monos como mascotas. Hoy dia el mono arana esta al borde de la extincion y es muy raro encontrarlos en su habitat natural.

Monitos arana con caras pintadas a mano y orejitas cosidas a mano! Listos para acompanar a Frida.

  Frida Kalho doll ready to go. I could not resist adding some flowers to her hair, they are made of porcelain clay, very strong and delicate at the same time.

Frida Kalho lista con sus monitos, no pude resistir la tentacion de anadir algunas florecitas de porcelana en su cabeza.

She can be hung up as a painting, also sit down and stand up with the help of a support.

Se puede colgar en la pared como si fuera una pintura, tambien puede sentarse y pararse con la ayuda de un soporte.

  

I added a wire in Frida's right arm, so she could carry her monkey.

Le puse un alambre en el brazo derecho para que pudiera cargar su monito.

The Frida Series

I started thinking about the possibility of making dolls out of paintings. The first one I did was the Frida Kalho painting "The two Fridas" . The dolls were separated and are now in private collections in Mexico, they did not stay together, sometimes life is like that.

I went on making the next dolls, Fridas, of course, I chose 5 paintings by the Mexican artist to bring to the realm of dolls. These paintings are among my favorites.

Comence a pensar en la posibilidad de hacer munecas inspiradas en pinturas, la primera que hice fue el autorretrato doble de Frida Kalho "Las dos Fridas". Ambas munecas terminaron en colecciones privadas en Mexico, separadas la una de la otra, a veces la vida es asi.

Asi que me puse a hacer las siguientes munecas, Fridas otra vez, en esta ocasion escogi 5 pinturas de la artista mexicana, las cuales se cuentan entre mis favoritas.

I made the bodies in muselin, they were painted, and buttons added for attaching the arms.

Hice los cuerpos en muselina, primero los pinte y despues les cosi los brazos con botones.

The very old technique of button-joint is a wonderful thing, the arms move and look neat and natural.

La vieja tecnica de coser los brazos con botones es increible, los brazos se mueven y toman poses muy naturales.

Muselin legs with hand painted stockings and boots were ready to stitch!

Las piernas hechas de muselina con calcetas y botas pintadas a mano, listas para ser cosidas al cuerpo!

The Frida bodies with arms, legs, and petticoats. I have to recognize that is kind of creepy going trough my studio, there are several unfinished dolls, lonely limbs sitting here and there, skulls, anatomy diagrams, paint stains, unopened mail... It looks like Dr. Frankenstein workshop, fortunately my husband, son, family, and visitors don't mind it at all. 

Los cuerpos de las Fridas ya tienen brazos, piernas y fondos. Tengo que reconocer que es medio macabro recorrer mi estudio, hay munecas a medio terminar, brazos y piernas desmembranados, craneos de munecas, diagramas de anatomia, manchas de pintura, cartas sin abrir... Se ve como el laboratorio del Dr. Frankenstein  afortunadamente mi esposo, hijo, familia y visitas no se fijan mucho (espero).

The next step was making the skirts, this particular style is native from Oaxaca in Mexico, it has been like that since long time ago, and has not changed that much. The ruffle is such a delicate decoration, I wonder how come actual skirts like this can survive over a hundred years or more.

El siguiente paso fue hacer las faldas, este estilo es proveniente de Oaxaca Mexico, se ha mantenido casi igual por mucho tiempo. El plisado es muy delicado, a veces me pregunto como es que faldas usadas por gente real llega a sobrevivir mas de 100 anios.

In two of the paintings Frida is wearing embroidered blouses, I embroidered the symbol OLLIN (movement, in nahuatl, which was the oficial language of Mexico before the Spanish conquest). 

En dos de las pinturas Frida lleva blusas bordadas, en una de ellas borde el simbolo OLLIN (movimiento, en nahuatl, que fue el idioma oficial de Mexico antes de la conquista)

 

The other blouse has the symbol of rain. The style of the blouse is from Yalalag, Oaxaca.

La otra blusa lleva bordado el simbolo de la lluvia. El estilo es propio del pueblo de Yalalag, Oaxaca.

Once the symbol was stitched in place I embroidered the edges and left the very characteristic detail of loose threads at the upper right side.

Una vez que termine el bordado me dedique a orillar los cuellos y deje el decorado caracteristico del fleco en la parte superior derecha.

The bodies with stitched skirts, clothing is not removable.

Los cuerpos con las faldas cosidas a la cintura, la ropa no se puede quitar.

Next step, putting on the blouses, and sewing the head to body.

Paso siguiente, poner las blusas y coser las cabezas a los cuerpos.

I got to the point to start working with the dolls individually, each one of them became different, and had different needs. Follow me in the next chapter, when I introduce "Selfportrait with monkeys"

Llegue al punto en que tenia que trabajar con las munecas de manera individual, cada una era diferente, con necesidades propias. Siganme en el siguiente capitulo, les presentare entonces a "Autorretrato con monos".

Frida Kalho, the second chapter

I went back to make Frida dolls, but this time they shrunk! Frida is now 3 inches tall, join me in the making of mini Frida, as well as I share the previews of other mini dolls such as Alice in Wonderland, and Coraline doll. Making different dolls at the same time was lots of fun.

Volvi a hacer munecas Frida, pero esta vez se encogieron! Ahora miden solo 7.7 cm. Acompanenme en el proceso mientras comparto la confeccion de otras mini munecas tales como Alicia en el pais de las maravillas y la muneca Coraline. Hacer munecas tan diversas al mismo tiempo fue muy divertido.

I chose to make 2 Alice dolls, 2 Fridas and 3 Coraline dolls. They were ready with white cotton petticoats. Coraline doll stand in the shadows (very much her style) in her yellow coat.

Decidi hacer 2 Alicias, 2 Fridas y 3 Coralines. Todas ellas estan listas con petticoats de algodon. Coraline esta atras, en la penumbra (muy a su estilo) con su impermeable amarillo.

 

One of the Fridas was going to wear the traditional dress from the Itsmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, black skirt with lace, and black embroidered blouse (this one was hand painted). Clothes are sewn to her body due to her size.

Una de las Fridas iba a portar el traje tipico del Itsmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, falda negra con encaje y blusa negra bordada (en este caso pintada a mano). La ropa fue cosida a su cuerpo debido a lo pequeno de su talla.

The other Frida was going to wear a yellow blouse with a red motive and black skirt with lace. She had hair already! Her hair was needle felted strand by strand.

La otra Frida iba a llevar una blusa amarilla con un motivo en rojo y falda negra con encaje. Esta muneca ya tenia pelo! Su cabello fue colocado con agujas de afelpar fibra por fibra.

 Both Fridas with their costumes ready, they went to take a walk before going to the hairdresser.

Ambas Fridas con sus vestidos listos, pareciera que se fueron a caminar antes de ir con el estilista.

Las dos Fridas

They are my more recent dolls, based on the original painting by Frida Kalho "The two Fridas". Join me in the journey...

Ellas son mis munecas mas recientes, basadas en la pintura original de Frida Kalho "Las dos Fridas". Acompanenme en la jornada que me llevo a realizarlas...

This painting was the root of my inspiration, I started wondering what if I can actually interact with the elements of a painting, to bring two-dimensional objects to the real world and have a lot of fun with them.

Esta pintura fue el origen de mi inspiracion, comence a preguntarme si era posible interactuar con los elementos de una pintura, poder manifestar en tercera dimension lo que antes solo existia en dos planos.

Also it was very inspiring to see a special part in the "Frida" movie by Salma Hayek, it was the closest thing I have seen about the idea I had. It is the scene where she is drinking and finds Chavela Vargas sitting at a table, Chavela starts singing "La Llorona" (The Weeping Woman), which is a song very important and transcendental in the Mexican culture. I will talk about the song later on.
Then Frida (Salma), starts walking around and finds the other Frida dressed in white, heartbroken and lonely.

 Tambien fue inspirador para mi el ver una escena particular de la pelicula "Frida" actuada por Salma Hayek, esta escena ha sido lo mas cercano respecto a la idea que tenia en mente. Es cuando Frida esta tomando en una cantina y encuentra a Chavela Vargas en una mesa, esta ultima comienza a cantar "La Lorona", cancion que es muy popular e importante dentro de la Cultura Mexicana, y de la cual hablare despues.


The first process was drafting the dress patterns, cutting the fabric, and starting the slow process of sewing, many of the pieces had to be hand sewn, due to the intricacy of the clothing (One thing is PAINTING dresses and another one is SEWING the dresses!) If just Frida knew...

El primer paso fue trazar los patrones de los vestidos, cortar la tela y comenzar el lento proceso de coserlos. Muchas de las piezas tuvieron que ser cosidas a mano debido a lo intrincado de la vestimenta (Una cosa es PINTAR los vestidos y otra es COSERLOS!) Si solo Frida supiera... 

All right, we have the clothing in there, now lets talk about the dolls

Muy bien, he ahi la ropa, ahora vamos con las munecas.

They have a needle sculpted noose, and the body has been painted with a water resistant primer, then acrylic paint, then a coat of water resistant varnish. They are washable! It is enough to clean them with a little bit of soap, and dry them with a soft towel without rubbing them.

La nariz ha sido realzada con aguja (escultura en tela) y el cuerpo lo pinte con un sellador a prueba de agua, despues con acrilicos y por ultimo con un varniz mate resistente al agua. Es posible lavarlas! Suficiente con  limpiarlas con un poco de jabon suave y secarlas con una toalla suave sin frotarlas.

Then I sewn the ears, and painted their underwear. In the original painting they have their hearts depicted on the clothing, but after too much work with the dresses I just did not want to disturb them anymore. So I painted those hearts in the brassieres.  More discreet, I think.
In their underwear I wrote the phrases "La Zandunga" for the Frida dressed in Mexican costume, she has a whole heart and holds Diego's portrait in the painting; and "La Llorona" for the one in white dress, she has a broken heart and is bleeding. They are names of popular Mexican songs, "La Zandunga" talks about a girl that plays with a boy and breaks his heart, "La Llorona" is more complicated, just think that the English translation is Weeping woman, then there you go.

Despues les cosi las orejas y pinte su ropa interior, en la pintura original se pueden ver los corazones sobre la ropa, pero despues de tanto trabajo con esos vestidos simplemente ya no quise tocarlos y pinte los corazones en los brassieres. Mas intimo, digo.
En las pantaletas escribi las frases "La Zandunga" en la Frida que esta vestida en traje de Tehuana, tiene el corazon completo y sostiene el retrato de Diego en la pintura, y "La Llorona" en la que tiene el vestido blanco, cuyo corazon esta partido y sangra. Estas frases son nombres de canciones populares mexicanas, "La Zandunga" habla de una mujer que juega con un hombre y le rompe el corazon. La Llorona es mas complicada, simplemente es la llorona.

   

Time to root the hair. I used black yarn, 80% wool, 20% polyester, and needle felted each one on the head. They don't have bald spots, and their hair can be stylized again. 

Tiempo para ponerles cabello. Use estambre negro 80% lana, 20% poliester, y los inserte usando una aguja para afelpar. Sus cabezas estan completamente cubiertas de cabello, sin huecos, y pueden ser repeinadas.

At this point I wanted to base one of Frida's corset in another of her paintings "The broken column". I adapted the image so it can be used by children, my dolls don't have age restrictions.

En este momento quise basar uno de los corset de Frida en otra de sus pinturas "La columna rota". Adapte la imagen para que pudiera ser usada por ninos, mis munecas no tienen restricciones basadas en edad.

They can be hung too. Both have a string and black buttons in the back of their heads.

Ambas pueden ser colgadas en la pared. Tienen botones negros y un cordon atras de la cabeza.
