This painting is very impressing, it talks about Frida facing divorce, loneliness, and physical pain; later she remarried Diego Rivera in December 1940. Also is one of very few where she paints herself in frontal position, most of her paintings are three quarter portraits.

La pintura es impresionante, nos habla de una Frida sola, divorciada, llena de dolor fisico; poco despues, en diciembre de 1940 volvio a casarse con Diego Rivera. Esta es una de las pocas ocasiones en las que se pinta de frente, la mayoria de sus retratos fueron ejecutados en posicion de tres cuartos.

It was quite a challenge to paint such a strong frontal portrait, once I was finished I remember telling myself how sad this particular doll seemed to be, compared to the others. For this portrait Frida did not focus on painting embroidered blouses, but in the intricacy of the thorn necklace.

Fue un gran desafio pintar un retrato frontal de sentimiento tan fuerte, una vez que termine y la vi junto con las demas munecas, oi decirme a mi misma lo triste que se veia esta muneca. En este retrato Frida no se intereso en pintar una blusa bordada, sino en la minucia del collar de espinas.

This is the thorn necklace before it was wrapped around Frida's neck, it was made of twine, modelling paste and acrylic paint. In the painting looks too thight, it seems to choke Frida, for the doll I made something more moderate.

Este es el collar de espinas antes de que se lo pusiera a Frida, esta hecho de cuerda, pasta para modelar y pintura acrilica. En la pintura se ve muy apretado, casi a punto del extrangulamiento, para la muneca decidi hacer algo mas moderado.

The black hummingbird is made of paper clay and painted with acrylics. In Mexico the hummingbird stands for love, single people go to the markets to get stuffed hummingbirds, and believe the bird will bring them love, the folk name for such an item is "chupamirto". Nowadays this tradition is almost extinct (good news for the hummingbirds, of course). In Frida's case, the black hummingbird stand for a dead love.

El colibri negro esta hecho de arcilla de papel, pintado con acrilicos. En Mexico el colibri tiene el significado de amor, la gente soltera solia ir a los mercados y comprar colibries disecados con el proposito de encontrar pareja(s), a tales amuletos se les llamaba "chupamirtos", hoy en dia la tradicion esta casi extinta (buenas noticias para los colibries por supuesto). En el caso de Frida el colibri negro significa un amor muerto.

The hairdo is something to look at, it is the traditional Aztec style, still used in the Tehuantepec Isthmus today. This is kind of weird, because the native population over there is Zapotec, although they shared things in common like fashion. The brooches on Frida's braids are silver butterflies, she had a pair like that in her collection.

El peinado es muy detallado, es el estilo original de las mujeres Aztecas, aun usado en el Itsmo de Tehuantepec, esto es medio raro porque la poblacion nativa de la region es Zapoteca, aun asi ambas culturas compartian cosas en comun, sobre todo en el atuendo. Los prendedores en las trenzas de Frida eran mariposas de plata, la pintora tuvo un par asi en su coleccion de joyeria.

Frida with whole outfit, her simplicity only adds more beauty to the overal figure. I omitted the monkey and cat that appear in the painting because they are behind the artist, without any contact with her, acting like shadows of her sorrow, I though she had enough already!

Frida con su atuendo completo, la simpleza de la vestimenta solo le anade belleza a la figura, decidi no hacer el mono ni el gato porque se encuentran atras de la artista, no entran en real contacto con ella, solo son espectadores de su dolor, creo que Frida ya habia tenido demasiado!

This was one of the 5 pictures I chose for making a Frida Kalho doll -with monkey dolls-. She painted herself in the company of four monkeys, for Frida they stand for polygamy. Her husband Diego cheated on her frequently, and she paid him with the same coin.

Esta fue una de las 5 pinturas que elegi para hacer una muneca de Frida Kalho -con los monos incluidos-. Aqui se pinto en conpania de cuatro monos, para ella los animalitos significaban poligamia, su esposo Diego le fue infiel frecuentemente y ella le pago con la misma moneda.

The symbol OLLIN was embroidered in a muslin blouse, the word ollin means "movement" in nahuatl, which originally was the official language of the Aztecs.

El simbolo OLLIN fue bordado en la blusa de muselina. La palabra ollin significa "movimiento" en nahuatl, que fue el idioma oficial de los Aztecas.

 I made the monkeys in muslin and painted them with black acrylics. I chose to make only the two monkeys that are in Frida's arms, the others seem too distant, and hiding in the leaves.

Hice los monos en muselina y los pinte con acrilico negro, decidi hacer solo los monos que estan con Frida, los otros dos se ven muy lejanos y escondidos entre las hojas.

 They have wire inside their long limbs, I used buttons for attaching them to the body.
Ambos tienen alambre en los miembros, use botones para coserlos a los cuerpos.

 These monkeys are spider monkeys, they are small, skinny, very agile, their limbs and tail are extra long, and very intelligent. Frida kept some of them as pets, she was very fond of exotical animals. Nowadays the spider monkey is almost extinct in its natural habitat.

Este mono en particular es el llamado mono arana, son pequenos, delgaditos, muy agiles, sus miembros y cola son muy largos y son muy inteligentes. Frida tuvo varios monos como mascotas. Hoy dia el mono arana esta al borde de la extincion y es muy raro encontrarlos en su habitat natural.

Spider monkeys with painted faces, and stitched ears! Ready to join Frida.

Monitos arana con caras pintadas a mano y orejitas cosidas a mano! Listos para acompanar a Frida.

  Frida Kalho doll ready to go. I could not resist adding some flowers to her hair, they are made of porcelain clay, very strong and delicate at the same time.

Frida Kalho lista con sus monitos, no pude resistir la tentacion de anadir algunas florecitas de porcelana en su cabeza.

She can be hung up as a painting, also sit down and stand up with the help of a support.

Se puede colgar en la pared como si fuera una pintura, tambien puede sentarse y pararse con la ayuda de un soporte.

  

I added a wire in Frida's right arm, so she could carry her monkey.

Le puse un alambre en el brazo derecho para que pudiera cargar su monito.

A new journey: Doll making

I learned to use the sewing machine and basic handcraft skills at my mother's sewing workshop. She used to have a production of 300 coats a week.
But it was very different to make dolls. It was new for me, and I decided to purchase some patterns via online; after looking for a pretty, interesting doll, I chose the designs of a very well known artist, Maureen Mills, from Sweet Meadows Farm.
I got "Too many cats" and "Ice scream, U scream!", these dolls were really wonderful, and I was just crazy for making them. There were a lot of good techniques in these patterns, since I did not have idea about coffee stained muslin, vintage buttons or the use of acrylic painting for decorating! Yes, I acted like a cave girl.

Aprendi a usar la maquina de coser y los conocimientos basicos en manualidades en el taller de costura de mi mama, quien tenia una produccion semanal de 300 chamarras.
Sin embargo iba a ser muy diferente hacer munecas, era algo nuevo para mi y decidi comprar patrones via internet, despues de buscar disenos que fueran interesantes y bonitos, me decidi por las creaciones de una artista bien conocida, Maureen Mills, de Sweet Meadows Farm.
Escogi "Too many cats" (Demasiados gatos) y "Ice scream, U scream!" (unas ninas con helados muy padres). Las munecas me parecieron encantadoras y me moria de ganas por empezarlas. Encontre bastantes tecnicas en esos patrones, la verdad es que no tenia ni idea de que se trataba manchar la muselina con cafe para dar coloracion a la "piel" de la muneca, ni de botones de estilo antiguo, ni del uso de pintura acrilica para decorar. Si, lo reconozco, actue como nina recien salida de la era de las cavernas.

Painted socks and shoes, coffee stained bodies, all waiting to get dry...

Zapatos y calcetas pintadas, cuerpos manchados de cafe, todo esperando a estar seco...

It was too much fun all of the process after the pieces were dry: Arms and legs stitched to bodies, embroidered face, painted eyes.


Fue super divertido todo el proceso despues de que se secaron las piezas: Coser los brazos y piernas, bordar las caras, pintar los ojos.

These girls were big! 23 inches tall. After I sewn the legs I could not believe how much they grew. Also I discovered that painting the red and white strips is very therapeutic.

Estas ninas estaban mas grandes de lo que me imagine! 59 cm de altura. Despues de que les cosi las piernas no pude creer cuanto crecieron. Tambien descubri que pintar calcetas rayadas es muy terapeutico.





After I got to make the dresses, and I thanked my mother for all of her teaching.

Despues me puse a hacerles los vestidos, y agradeci a mi mama por todo lo que me enseno.

It was exciting to see how they were changing...

Que interesante fue ver como iban cambiando...









These girls were already big, now with the dress, underskirt, and bloomers they seemed huge... But cute.

Estas ninas de por si eran altas, ahora con el vestido, la falda y los calzones se veian enormes... Pero encantadoras.






The last step was the hair, it took me two days finish their hairdos, but at the end the whole experience it was rewarding.

I could not believe all of the details that I still had to do, in the beginning it seemed to fast, but it was like building a house, just when you think you are finished, it takes double time to get done those little details.

No podia creer todos los detalles que aun faltaban, al principio parecia que todo iba muy rapido, pero fue como construir una casa, justo cuando uno piensa que ya esta terminada, acabar con los detalles toma el doble de tiempo.

I still had to do these funny cats. My son loved to throw them all around the house.

Todavia tenia que terminar los gatos. Mi hijo estaba feliz aventandolos por toda la casa.








At the end of this new adventure of making dolls I was really pleased, and eager to make more. These are the final pictures of my first dolls.
