THE DOVE

Everything has its opposite: Left and right, black and white, day and night, sugar and salt, etc,. When I started thinking about making a crow-like doll, I had in mind to make a dove-like girl all of the time, they were two independent dolls and at the same time only one. I started thinking about them as sisters.

When I start making a doll I begin with a sketch about the shape and size of the skeleton, usually made of galvanized wire, something that let me see proportions and a general idea of the dolls' dimensions. For the rest I go with the flow, it is very important to have the right skeleton, otherwise the whole doll just goes out of control.

I made both dolls out of the same sketch, but for some reason The Crow was taller than her sister The Dove. Still, both dolls were very harmonious and had the perfect features for their own theme.

As I do with most of my dolls, I painted her features and stockings with acrylic paints, then I got to trace her dress and make it come alive.I thank my mother for the training I got at her sewing workshop, many years ago. It is a delight to work with all kind of fabrics, this one is a remnant of a bride's gown from the 80's, the fabric is very heavy, silky, bright, a pleasure to touch, sew, and work with.

Due to the nature of the fabric and the size of the pieces I had to hand-sew the whole dress and finally added a ruffle to the neck, wrists, and dress' edge. The fabric for the ruffle is from a 75 year-old dress, still in perfect condition!

What a gorgeous girl!

Que nina tan bonita!

For her hair I chose wool, it is very soft, it can be restyled and looks great.

I made her stand out of clay and wire, and stamped her name in English, Latin, and Spanish. She really does not need it, because she is able to stand up by herself.

As I did with her sister, I made for her a pair of quilted wings.

The Crow

Once I dreamed about a hybrid creature, mix of a girl and a crow, her face was human, somehow I could make her features bird-like, design black clothing, even giving her wings. Also she had to be very elegant.

I started with a wire skeleton and epoxy-clay limbs, they became so sturdy that she was able to stand up by herself! Her head was modeled in stone clay.

Because the wire skeleton, she was highly bendable, I could move her arms wherever pose I wanted, this was so much fun! Her shoulders and elbows could rotate as human joints do.

I painted her with acrylics, then made her some black bloomers.

The doll was very complex, it took me some days to finish her, when I made her dress it was so cloudy that I had to go outside and hand sew, then took the picture with no sun at all.

Her dress was made out of a very nice piece of fabric, it is textured, the leaves are black velvet, the fabric was part of a fashion designer's collection whom I am glad to count among my friends.

Wool is my favorite for making hair, it looks very realistic. For her dress I added some ruffles of very light fabric at the neck and end of sleeves.

She does noes not need the stand, but still I made it because I wanted to print her name somewhere, the idea was to use rubber stamps and print her name in English, Spanish, and Latin, why? I don't know, I just knew that was part of the plan.

crow - corvus corax - cuervo

I made her some wings using the quilting technique, the great part is that these wings can be detached from the doll, she uses her wings whenever she wants!

From the beginning I had in my mind making a couple of dolls, she is The Crow, the older sister, next time get ready to meet The Dove.

AN ANGEL IS BACK

I became fascinated with clay dolls, and started making them out of that feeling of amazement, serenity, and wonder that I get every time I see one. Clay dolls are something between fine sculpture and playthings, they reminded me of those clay dolls made by ancient people from Egypt, Italy, Greece, Germany, Brazil. We humans, love to recreate our form by any means, by any medium, since Prehistoric times to our present.

Egyptian Doll, 2nd - 4th Century A.D. / Muneca Egipcia 200 - 400 A.C.

Nuremberg Dolls, 15th Century / Munecas de Nuremberg, Siglo XV

Roman dolls, 2nd Century B.C. / Munecas Romanas, 200 A.C.

I started modeling these little doll (7" tall) in La Doll air dry clay, I love it, but the review about why I like it so much is for another posting. I modeled the head-trunk, arms, and legs as separate pieces, and pierced them to attach them later on.

Then she was painted with high quality acrylics in a very light hue.

I painted her face and gave her blue eyes, also sewn her dress and underskirt permanently, and then button-jointed her arms. I loved the idea of keeping some doll-cloth techniques, and using buttons for joining her arms and legs was always in my mind. They give her such mobility.

Once the dress and underskirt are in place I attached the legs and confirmed that she could stand by herself! The apron was made from the fabric of a 75 year old dress that belonged to my mother-in-law.

She is able to sit.

Tambien puede sentarse.

It was time to give her some hair. I used white wool, very soft, and easy to manage.

This was her look once I finished her hairdo, I made her two braids and tied them with pieces of the same fabric of the dress, and twisted them in the back of her head.

Since the very beginning she was meant to have wings. I sewn the wings to a black lace and wrap it around her back. It looks quite nice.

Apron is removable, here is a view of how she looks just with wings./ El delantal se puede quitar, asi se ve solo con las alas.
Doll with accesories, apron and wings, they are removable and can be matched./ La muneca con accesorios, delantal y alas, se pueden quitar y usar de manera individual.

She is listed on E-Bay, (She was sold, and is on her way to California. She is now in your hands, Debbie) you can see this set of pictures there:

She whispered to me that she lived in the Victorian age, and one day she fell asleep, then she found out she had wings, she could not remember her name, not the last time she played with her doll, she does not remember if actually she was that doll...

Time ragged my dress,
grave faded my skin.
I stood there in silence,
then, I got my wings.
