Baby Jesus' Story

For me it's always a pleasure restoring antiques, specially multidimensional ones, because there is plenty of fun in the process. Some years ago I restored a large plaster Jesus sculpture, circa 1930, it belonged to the grandmother of a friend of mine whom I really appreciate, Fernando Romo Durand. I did the job in my studio, in Mexico.

Para mí siempre es un placer restaurar antigüedades, especialmente esculturas porque es muy divertido y hay mucho jugo que sacarle a cada parte del proceso. Hace algunos años restauré una escultura del Maestro Jesús que databa de los años 30's, le pertenecia a la abuela de un querido amigo mio, el Ing. Fernando Romo Durand, hice este trabajo en mi estudio en México.

The sculpture was 40" tall, and it showed fading from sun exposure. He needed just a little bit of paint, because the whole piece was in perfect state, no cracks, not chipping away. My friend's grandmother had made a great job caring for it.

La escultura tenia 1 m de altura y mostraba decoloramiento debido a exposición del sol. Sólo necesitaba un poco de pintura porque la pieza entera estaba en perfecto estado de conservación, ninguna fractura o descarapelamientos. La abuela de mi amigo habia hecho muy buen trabajo cuidandolo.

I chose oil paintings for the re painting, they will stay in place for a long time. The job was done during the year of 2004. Ten years ago!

Escogi pinturas al oleo para repintarlo, este material dura por mucho tiempo, el trabajo fue realizado durante el  2004. Hace diez anos!

Moving forward in time, to 2013, I am already living in the USA and sharing my days with a bunch of great friends from all around the world. Two of them are Guido Garaycochea, an accomplished Peruvian artist, cosmopolitan, highly educated, and super-extra charismatic, and Jose Ulloa, a visionary engineer with entrepreneur's heart, very serious in the outside, pure fun in the inside. They brought that year from Chile, Jose's country, two antiques, both representing Jesus, one in the cross, one as a baby. 

     

Nos movemos en el tiempo hasta el 2013, vivo en Estados Unidos y tengo un montón de amigos de todas partes del mundo. Dos de ellos son Guido Garaycochea, un artista peruano reconocido y talentoso, cosmopolita, exageradamente culto y súper carismático y Jose Ulloa, un ingeniero visionario con corazon de empresario, muy serio por fuera y diversion pura por dentro. Ese año trajeron de Chile, el pais natal de Jose, dos antigüedades, una representado a Jesús en la cruz, otro como bebé.

Guido asked me to restore Baby Jesus, he had lost some fingers from hands and feet, and his hair was unraveling badly.

Guido me pidio que restaurara al Niño Jesús, este había perdido dedos de las manos, de los pies y su cabello se estaba despegando y maltratando.

This baby Jesus is over 100 years old, and he is very special, his eyes are made of glass, his teeth are made of very fine ceramic and were inserted, rather than modeled inside the mouth, which is totally hollow. I could see a metallic plate at the back, and have not idea how this could be possibly made. His hair is real human hair, Guido explained me that it is called "Indian's hair", which means the real hair of a native Peruvian, after too many years the color, which could have been very black, it turned to a brown. Once he arrived to my studio I took apart the chipped fingers with pliers and sanded all the damaged parts.

Este Niño Jesús tiene mas de 100 años y es muy especial. Sus ojos estan hechos de vidrio, sus dientes son de cerámica muy fina y estan insertados, no modelados dentro de la boca, la cual esta hueca. Pude apreciar en la parte de atras que correspondería al paladar, una placa metalica. No tengo idea como fue que se hizo esto. Su cabello es humano, Guido me explicó que se le llama "Pelo de India", que significa el cabello de un peruano nativo, pero después de tanto tiempo el color que debio haber sido muy negro, se volvio café. Una vez que llegó a mi estudio le quite los dedos maltratados con pinzas y lo lije hasta que retire la mayor parte del daño. 

This is the back view of his head, the hair was twisted in curls, and then glued to the head in circles, an amazing job indeed! The end of the curl strand was starting to unravel.

Esta es la vista posterior de su cabeza, su cabello estaba torcido y fue pegado a la cabeza en circulos, un gran trabajo de verdad! El final del rizo se había despegado y comenzaba a perder forma. 

Once I finished the sanding I drilled holes in each missing finger in order to replace them.

Una vez que manos y pies estuvieron lijados taladre hoyos en cada dedo para poder colocar los reemplazos.

Once the holes were ready, galvanized steel wire was inserted, their job was to act as the bone of the fingers... Literally.

Then a coat of epoxy clay, which cat set under water, and stands temperatures of 266°F was added for extra strength and for getting the wire ready for the next stage. 

Una vez que los orificios estuvieron listos, se inserto acero galvanizado, su trabajo es actuar como hueso de los dedos... Literalmente.

Después, una capa de plastilina epoxica que puede curar bajo el agua y que resiste temperaturas de 130°C fue agregada como refuerzo y para preparar el alambre para el siguiente paso.

While the epoxy clay cured I took the time to fix his hair. I let the clay set for two days, just to be sure.

Mientras la plastilina epoxica curaba, me tome el tiempo de arreglar el cabello. Dejé que la plastilina hiciera su trabajo por dos días, solo para estar segura.

Finally I took his shirt off and found out that his neck and left arm were broken, and glued back in place, but let them alone, since these repairs were ok. Then I got to model in air dry stone clay the missing parts of his hands and feet.

Finalmente le quite su camisón y descubrí que alguna vez su brazo izquierdo y su cabeza se habian quebrado y estaban pegados, no hice más porque las reparaciones estaban bien. Después me dediqué a modelar en arcilla de piedra las partes faltantes de sus manos y pies.

When the stone clay was dry, I sanded everything once more to make it even and applied a coat of gesso, getting it ready for painting.

Cuando la arcilla de piedra se secó, lijé todo nuevamente para unificarlo y apliqué una capa de yeso, preparandolo para el acabado.

I let the gesso dry for some days, in the meantime, I designed the clothes, and got to the always exciting fitting test!

Dejé que el yeso se secara por algunos días y mientras tanto aproveché para diseñar su ropa, muy pronto llego la hora de la prueba, que siempre es bien emocionante!

Guido told me that he wanted Colonial Peruvian garments for his baby, and after some investigation I found old Colonial Peruvian paintings of angels, and I took the prettiest details from them to make one for Baby Jesus. I used red velvet, textured linen, Mexican lace, and a very fine golden trim. Everything was hand sewn to assure the perfection in the fitting, because a figure like this is totally unmovable, the clothes have to be just perfect in all ways. 

Guido me había dicho que quería ropa Peruana de la Época Colonial para su bebé, después de algunas investigaciones encontre pinturas de angeles, provenientes del Perú Colonial y tomé los detalles mas bonitos de ellas para hacerle su traje al Niño Jesús. Usé terciopelo rojo, lino grueso y texturizado, encaje mexicano y remates dorados. Todo fue cosido a mano para asegurar que quede perfecto, una figura como estas es completamente inmóvil y la ropa tienen que ajustarse sin forzarla, simplemente tiene que ser perfecta.

I painted Baby Jesus, and got lots of fun getting the exact color of his skin, for restorations like this, leaving traces, edges, or seams is just not allowed. He also got an old fashioned linen diapers!

Pinté al Niño Jesús y me divertí en grande buscando el color exacto de su piel, en restauraciones como esta no se pueden dejar rastros, bordes o manchas. También le hice un pañal de estilo antiguo!

The sleeves are bishop style, and silk thread was added on elbows and wrists for forming the traditional "puffy" Colonial look.

Las mangas son estilo obispo, hilvané hilo de seda en los codos y muñecas para que se pudieran formar los clásicos abombados coloniales.

Then, an open long skirt-like garment is added.

Después se le coloca una especie de falda larga abierta, no podría ser llamado ropón porque se coloca en la cintura.

 At last! Baby Jesus completely restored and fully dressed, a wide linen belt completes the outfit. Guido and Jose can take him home and enjoy other 100 years of his company!

Por fin, el Niño Jesús completamente restaurado y vestido, una faja de lino complementa su traje. Guido y Jose pueden llevárselo a casa y disfrutar de su compañía otros 100 años!

   

I expended the beginning of 2014 finishing the details of Baby Jesus restoration. An augury of good luck and plenty of fun projects, as my dear friend Guido said.

OWLS AS PROTECTORS

     I decided to change the name of my blog, etsy shop, and brand. Many of the people that used to find me on Google or other searchers are missing me, the former name of the blog was www.josephine-artifacts-collection.blogspot.com, the NEW ONE is www.josephinemaxsonfineart.blogspot.com 

     New name, same content.

     Decidi cambiar el nombre de mi blog, tienda etsy y compania. Mucha de la gente que me encontraba por medio del Google u otros buscadores ahora no me encuentran. El nombre anterior de mi blog era www.josephine-artifacts-collection.blogspot.com , el nuevo nombre  es www.josephinemaxsonfineart.blogspot.com

     This time I am posting the process that culminated in the piece called "The Guardians", which now lives happily in Norwich, Connecticut, under caring collectors. These Guardians are owls, but they don't have anything to do with the ones from the owl movie, as I told to the visitors that heard my stories during the 2-month show held at Expressiones Gallery, in New London, CT. 

     Esta vez voy a explicar el proceso que culmino en la terminacion de la pieza llamada "Guardianes", quienes viven felizmente en Norwich, Connecticut, bajo el cuidado de fieles coleccionistas. Estos guardianes son buhos, que no tienen nada que ver con los de la pelicula de nombre similar, tal y como les explique a los visitantes que escucharon mis historias durante el show que duro dos meses en la Galeria Expressiones, de New London, CT.

     The piece came from a dream, I was walking in the woods, in a very pretty place when all sudden I found the most green, gorgeous valley just after some very old trees. When I approached the trees I found out that inside them there were owls, bigger than a human, sticking their heads out of the tree bark, and calling me. Their voices were the hoot sound of an owl, and I could not understand anything, but the view of these massive, beautiful creatures in such a place, made me remember them forever. They were meant to be in my art work anyway.

     Esta pieza surgio de un sueno, estaba caminando en un bosque muy bonito cuando de repente vi cerca un valle precioso del verde mas brillante que pueda recordar, antes de llegar al valle tenia que pasar por unos arboles. 

     Cuando me acerque a ellos encontre que adentro habia unos buhos mas grandes que un humano, que sacaban sus cabezas por hoyos que habia en el tronco y me hablaban. Sus voces eran el sonido comun de un buho y obviamente no entendi nada, sin embargo el haber visto unas criaturas tan grandes y tan bonitas en el sueno tan extrano, me dejo una marca que solo podia manifestarse en la creacion de una obra de arte.

     Usually I start with the rough version of the figures, this time I forced myself to the limits and started right away with plaster of Paris, applied with spatulas, my hands, and any tool at hand that helped me to achieve, first that anything, the shape, then the texture. After that was done I made sure the piece passed the test on stability. At last came the tougher trial, that of my son handling them!

     Usualmente empiezo con la version basica de las figuras, esta vez me lance mas alla de mis limites y comence a trabajar con yeso de Paris, el cual aplique con espatulas, mis manos y cuanta cosa se me atraveso en el camino, mi objetivo principal era el conseguir la silueta y despues la textura. Despues me asegure de que la pieza pasara la prueba de estabilidad y luego lo mas dificil, que mi hijo las tocara!

     The owls got a face! This is a very exciting part, when our efforts start paying off! They acquired a face and survived my son's handling, by this time the big owl was "Daddy owl" and the little one "Baby owl", according to the feeling of my quality control manager. The last one was his favorite and used to carry it around the house.

     Los buhos ya tienen cara! Esta parte es muy emocionante, cuando lo esfuerzos de uno empiezan a mostrarse! Tambien sobrevivieron a mi hijo y en este momento ya los habia bautizado como "Buho daddy" y el mas pequeno "Buho hijo", este ultimo fue su favorito y lo cargaba por la casa.

          The bigger owl (Daddy owl) is the representation of the Earth (which makes it more a mommy), its colors reminded me a lot of our planet's surfaces, inside its body, where the little one fits, I executed copies of the cave paintings from Lascaux, Altamira, and Chauvet. This means the antiquity, History, and legacy of the whole humankind in its creative aspect.

     El buho grande (Buho daddy) es la representacion de la Tierra (lo que lo hace mas una mami), sus colores me recuerdan las diversas superficies de nuestro planeta, adentro de su cuerpo, en la parte hueca donde cabe el buho pequeno, realice unas copias de pinturas rupestres originarias de Lascaux, Altamira y Chauvet. Esto tiene el significado de la antiguedad, historia y legado de la humanidad en su aspecto creativo.

     The smallest owl symbolizes the Universe, it is blue and starry. 

     El buho mas pequeno simboliza el Universo, es azul y esta lleno de estrellas. 

Face of humankind, partially finished/ Mascara de la humanidad, parcialmente terminada

     The third and last part of the sculpture is a mask that symbolizes humankind regardless of race, religion, background, etc.. That's the reason I painted it greenish, so nobody can feel any allusion. It is greenish too because it tells about a being that is immature, the rune symbol displayed on its forehead, which is called a bindrune (two or more runes mixed together) means changes, travel, unknown opportunities, which are very much the ingredients of humankind's History since the beginning of time (from the rune EOH, which looks like an M), plus getting satisfactory conclusions and results, something every human being craves for, from the beginning of time (from the rune ING, which looks like a rhomboid).

     La tercera y ultima pieza de la escultura es una mascara que simboliza la humanidad sin importar raza, religion, origen, etc... Esta es la razon por la cual la pinte verde, para que nadie se sienta aludido. Es verde tambien porque nos habla de un ser inmaduro, el simbolo que tiene en la frente es conocido como bindruna (dos o mas runas mezcladas) y simboliza cambios, viajes, oportunidades desconocidas, que son aspectos que han conformado la historia de la humanidad desde el principio de los tiempos (por la runa EOH, que parece una M), mas aparte el obtener conclusiones satisfactorias y resultados, que es algo que todo mundo ha buscado desde el principio de los tiempos (por la runa ING, que se ve como un rombo). 

     An adventure that started as a dream and finished as an Artwork!

     Una aventura que empezo como un sueno y termino como una obra de arte!
