Yeah, they are back, and they are ALMOST done. These guys got their helmets and clothes!

I finished the helmets in 3 steps, letting the paper clay dry between stages, it is easier. The Templar's helmet was kind of challenging, but once I saw the main structure of the form it was easier to get, it looks like a bucket upside down.
Termine los cascos en 3 etapas, dejando secar la arcilla de papel entre una y otra, asi fue mas facil. El casco templario se veia dificil de hacer, pero una vez que me di cuenta de la estructura basica de la forma fue mas facil, se ve como una cubeta de cabeza.
Once they were dry I painted them with acrylics and metallic wax, this is how they look like:

The helmets are going to get two coats of polyurethan.
Los cascos todavia van a recibir dos manos de poliuretano.
For designing the cross in the chest (Hospitaller and Templar) I simplified it to the plus sign: +
The reason is that I don't want to relate them to any religion, the times they lived were very different to ours in many senses. We cannot judge them in the context of our own present. Neither in the context of anything that surrounded them by then. Included religion.

Mi razon primordial es que no quiero relacionarlos con ninguna religion, los tiempos en los que vivieron fueron muy diferentes a los nuestros en muchos sentidos, lo mismo con las razones que tenian para hacer lo que hicieron, etc. No podemos juzgarlos dentro del contexto de nuestro presente, o dentro del contexto de las cosas que los rodeaban en aquel entonces, incluida la religion.
By making these dolls I want to emphasize the good qualities that embodied these men, and add a + symbol to make them even bigger. The curious thing is that those qualities have survived the pass of time, because they belong to the human race. This is my list of crusader's good traits :
1. Courage: Because it takes a lot of courage to throw yourself against a huge wall, while a rain of arrows and "Greek fire" (highly flammable chemical) falls on you like confetti.
2. Ingenuity: Because we have to be really naive to believe that by taking the cross and suffer from now on, we already deserve the erasing of all of our sins. In this case what I like about their ingenuity is the wish to be pure, and clean again.
3. Perseverance: Want to take a walk from any western European country to Jerusalem? Expend 6 months under the rain, the snow, the cold, the heat, the mosquitoes, the bandits, the hunger, etc, etc? Backpackers do that nowdays, but they don't have to wear a chain mail, carry a heavy sword, shield, helmet (no matter how heavy the backback, nothing compares to that of the crusader). Now imagine the horse, carrying the crusader with all his equipment plus horse armor! They were the real heroes.
Al hacer estos munecos quise enfatizar las cualidades de aquellos hombres y agregarles un signo de mas + para hacerlo aun mas grande. Lo curioso es que estas cualidades han sobrevivido el paso del tiempo porque le pertenecen a la raza humana. Esta es mi lista de cualidades de un cruzado:
1. Valentia: Porque uno tiene que ser muy valiente para aventarse contra una muralla mientras llueven sin parar sobre uno flechas y "fuego griego" (quimico altamente inflamable) como si fueran confetti.
2. Ingenuidad: Uno tiene que ser muy ingenuo para creer que al tomar la cruz y sufrir de ahi en adelante ya nos merecemos el perdon de todos nuestros pecados. In este caso lo que me gusta de esta clase de ingenuidad es el deseo de ser puros y limpios nuevamente.
3. Perseverancia: Quien se anima a hecharse una caminata desde cuanquier pais europeo hasta Jerusalen? Pasarse 6 meses bajo la lluvia, la nieve, el frio, el calor extremo, los moscos, los bandidos, el hambre, etc, etc? Mochileros hoy en dia hacen esto, pero no tienen que llevar una cota de malla, ni cargar espada, casco, escudo (no importa que pesada sea la mochila, nunca se va a comparar con la del cruzado). Ahora imaginense el caballo, llevando al cruzado con todo su equipo, mas su propia armadura de caballo! Ellos eran los verdaderos heroes.
In these crusader dolls I kept the best of these men, now I started thinking they need some weapons. See you next week, I will come up with something.
En estos munecos mantengo lo mejor que fueron estos hombres, ahora estoy pensando en sus armas. Nos vemos la semana que viene, para entonces ya se me habra ocurrido algo.
